Rep. Peter DeFazio is coming to the coast this week and he's expecting a lot of questions about health care reform.

Some of the Springfield Democrat's colleagues have faced rude receptions at similar events in the past week over the subject. The 12-term Congressman isn't concerned. He's held about 400 such events since his election to the House in 1987. And he's occasionally had to grapple with disruptive speakers.

"I generally ask people if they want this person to keep yelling," he said Monday. "Audiences usually tell them to sit down."

The Springfield Democrat is scheduled to hit Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and North Bend on Thursday.

It's part of a four-day, 14-city tour of his district during Congress' August recess. He's planning to discuss the economy, transportation legislation - his forte - as well as other issues brought up by constituents. But his offices' phones and e-mail boxes have been inundated with queries about health care.

If disruptive speakers descend on North Bend Community Center on Thursday, they likely won't be representatives from local political groups.

Andy Jackson, chairman of the Coos County Republican Central Committee, said his group has no plans to send protesters to the meeting.

That's the same with Americans for Prosperity, said Monty Stewart, an assistant chairman in Reedsport. The national grassroots organization with state branches favors limited government and free markets. The Oregon group's top goal is reversing the state tax increases passed during the 2009 Legislative Session, but its members plan to show up for DeFazio's talk.

"We have concerns," he said. "But we are not planning to shout him down or anything. We just want to find out where he stands on this."

The Democratic Central Committee offered to help DeFazio and has publicized his arrival, said Molly Ford, the group's chairwoman.

"Other than that, we haven't made any other special efforts," she said.

DeFazio isn't on the committees crafting health care legislation in the House, but he's in a group with representatives from states with low Medicare reimbursement rates. Some doctors won't see Medicare patients because the reimbursement payments are so low. Representatives working on the legislation have told DeFazio the bill won't come out of committee without addressing that issue.

"We've been guaranteed that they will fix Medicare reimbursement rates so seniors will have better access to physicians," he said.

For his part, DeFazio wants to eliminate the anti-trust law exemption insurance companies enjoy and create a public insurance option. But, he insists, he's open to suggestions. He also wants to dispel the myths arising over health care reform. He plans to hand out material at the town hall meetings about the debate. There are three competing bills in the House, one in the Senate and plenty more ideas floating around Washington.

"Some people think this is already done but it's not," he said.

If something comes together, it will likely appear in final version around Christmas, he said. Several Congressmen, including DeFazio, have insisted the final bill must be posted online for at least two days before they'll vote on it. DeFazio said it was a mistake to vote on the federal stimulus bill so quickly without giving people a chance to read it, and he doesn't want a repeat of that with a health care bill.

It may be long, one of the proposals runs over 1,000 pages, but such issues can be complicated.

"It's my job to read them and understand them," he said. "I tell people what is likely to move forward and what's not. That's what people hired me to do."

Well said Mr. E.. Well said... Coos County might be the only place where a time capsule can be dug up and all the old coots will still find use of the items they put in there 50 years ago...

People are going to protest, complain, say what is on their minds. Yes, we should give the man a chance to say where he stands on this and then voice our opinions, but if he thinks nobody is going to shout and voice thier disapproval over this plan, then he had better think harder about it.
I believe people are getting really fed up with this mess and they are going to say something!!!!! We all can count on that.

How does Defazio get re-elected each election? Easy... Drive through Eugene sometime and you'll know.

Good grief, look at you people.... Bashing the man & his plan before he even gets the chance to speak.

All I ask is that you let the others who are there for a real discussion have that opportunity, without the shout-downs.

Such nastiness about such an important issue pertaining to people's health deserves better. I hope those of you against this will remember that and either be civil or stay home.

There are lives that depend on decent health care reform, and those who encourage competition shouldn't fear that. Nobody's taking away anyone's choice here. Live and let live for God's sake...

Some cute comments in here...

First, DeFazio is one of the few members of Congress that actually seems to have a viable interest in those he serves in the public, not those who have money and bribe politicians. If you think he's a "do nothing," I'd go so far as to call you a "know nothing."

Second, old people need to drop the "socialism" shtick. You don't know what "socialism" is... heck, if you were to call the shots, Pluto would still be a planet, we'd be using tubes instead of transistors, and the atom would consist exclusively of a nucleus. I'm sorry that your "I'll believe anything they told me in 1950" mentality exists, but for the good of the world, please stop.

Third, the strict Constitutionalism died about 20 years after the document was initially written. I'm sorry that you don't realize, for instance, entities such as the FCC aren't technically covered in the Constitution, yet still exist.

The whole point is, you can DeFazio anything you like or want.

He's going to turn his pointed little head towards the crowd, smirk, and not answer.

As usual.

FoxHollowMan wrote on Aug 11, 2009 4:17 PM:

I hope someone will ask Mr. DeFazio what authority for the federal government to pass laws regulating health care or health insurance is granted by the Constitution, which enumerates all federal powers and reserves all additional powers to the states and the people. And no, the general welfare clause is not one of the articles.

As your elected official, it will be my job to listen to my constituents, not talk at them!

I e-mailed all our representatives requesting an answer-only Ron Wyden replied and that was with his newsletter-not an answer to any questions. Go figure. Socialized medicine has no place in the USA. Also illegal immigration needs to be addressed. 17% of those without insurancea are illegals...and Obama wants the illegal kids to get health care...not on my dollar...

George Soros wrote on Aug 11, 2009 11:54 AM:

Did you receive your marching orders?
I did! They were to go to DeFazio's office in Coos Bay to address your displeasure with Health Care Reform..
oh, me bad!
Actually it was meant to ask for support, but it can be used to show your NON-support!! ;)

Just Me wrote on Aug 11, 2009 11:50 AM:

One comment in DeFazio's defense, in my own personal experience with him. I was in a battle for 6 years to get my social security disability insurance due to a severe back injury. I hired an attorney to help, social security fought me the whole way (6 yrs). One day I recieved a letter in the mail, it was a copy of a letter that DeFazio had taken upon himself to write to social security on my behalf defending my rights to recieve these benefits. At my next hearing I was approved. To this day I do not know how he gained access to my info, but he did. I feel he is the one that changed their minds. I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and this is just mine. My hopes are that he does listen at this meeting and takes into account what everyone has to say and channels it where it belongs!

Shallow Al wrote on Aug 11, 2009 11:04 AM:

As usual, DeFazio makes no mention of the economy, the war, foreign aid, unemployment.

This guy only stands for himself. How voters keep re-electing this guy says a lot more about the poor quality of his opponents that it does about anything he has accomplished.

Health care is a major issue. The problem is, Defazio uses it as a carrot on a stick, gets all the attention focussed on that issue and never gets beyond it.

How can he be shouted down when no one can figure out what he is talking about or where he stands?

Wonder if he'll bring some of those bottles with the spot remover in them to sell?
