Blossom Gulch program earns Clinton recognition

Sunday, August 09, 2009 |
Former President Bill Clinton recognized Blossom Gulch Elementary in Coos Bay for its efforts to promote healthy living at the Fourth Annual Health Schools Program Forum in New York this week. The school received one of 114 Bronze Healthy Schools Program National Recognition Awards.
Blossom Gulch provides fresh fruit for every student every day and hired its first full-time physical education teacher, after 25 years without one. The school schedules 150 minutes of PE each week for first, second, third and fourth graders. School officials also have encouraged healthy activities like Walk to School days, TV Turnoff week and LAPS program, that encourages students to run during recesses.
“Blossom Gulch is very proud of its student successes, staff wellness activities and parent participation,” said Angie Webster, a Coos Bay School District nurse who’s worked the previous years at Blossom Gulch.
