CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Zheng Jie upset top-ranked Dinara Safina 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the third round of the LA Women’s Tennis Championships, beating the Russian for the first time in five career meetings.

Safina, the defending tournament champion and runner-up at the Australian and French opens this year, struggled with her serve and numerous unforced errors throughout the match. Safina netted a backhand on match point after being broken at love in the previous game.

Earlier, Maria Sharapova rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Alona Bondarenko and Samantha Stosur defeated sixth-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-2, in the third round.

No. 2 seed Vera Zvonareva was a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 winner over Yanina Wickmayer and will face No. 10 seed Flavia Pennetta, who beat fifth-seeded Nadia Petrova 6-3, 6-3. Agnieszka Radwanska, the No. 8 seed, ousted Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-2, and was joined in the quarterfinals by younger sister Urszula Radwanska, who advanced when No. 12 seed Li Na withdrew because of a right ankle injury.

Agnieszka Radwanska will take on Sorona Cirstea, who was leading Sabine Lisicki, 6-3, 1-0, when Lisicki retired with a right shoulder injury.

Roddick wins

WASHINGTON (AP) — Andy Roddick won the 500th match of his professional career with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Sam Querrey in the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.

Roddick became the 36th player and the fourth active one to reach the milestone, joining Roger Federer, Carlos Moya and Lleyton Hewitt, who fell to No. 2 seed Juan Martin del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) .

No. 10 seed Tommy Haas defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Fifth-seeded Robin Soderling also needed three sets, but ousted Marc Gicquel 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

No. 4 seed Fernando Gonzalez advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over American Wayne Odesnik. No. 11 Ivo Karlovic defeated qualifier Somdev Devvarman 7-5, 6-1 in his third-round match and will face Roddick in the quarterfinals.

Rashard Lewis tests positive for testosterone

NEW YORK (AP) — Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis tested positive for an elevated testosterone level and was suspended for 10 games.

Lewis said in a statement that he took an over-the-counter supplement late last season that included a substance he did not realize was banned by the NBA.

He will be suspended without pay for the first 10 regular-season games for which he is eligible and physically able to play. He will be docked about $1.6 million of his $18 million salary for the 2009-10 season.

The first game he could play would be Nov. 16 at home against Charlotte. He will miss Orlando’s first game against Cleveland, the team the Magic upset in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Orlando Sentinel first reported the positive test Thursday. Citing unidentified league sources, the newspaper reported the supplement contained DHEA, a steroids precursor.

Court rules in favor of injured boy

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The parents of a young boy struck in the head when a batter hit a ball into a picnic area before an Albuquerque Isotopes game can sue the minor league team and the city, an appellate court has ruled.

The New Mexico Court of Appeals declined to adopt the so-called “baseball rule,” which immunizes stadium owners from liability as long as they have screens protecting the stands behind home plate.

The court said there is “no public policy reason to justify bestowing immunity on the business of baseball.” The decision clears the way for a lawsuit by the parents of Emilio Crespin to proceed in state district court in Albuquerque.

The Isotopes and the city of Albuquerque will ask the state Supreme Court to review the decision issued last week.

A three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals decided the case 2-1, with the third judge dissenting.Fielder, Mota fined

Fielder, Mota fined

NEW YORK (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers star Prince Fielder and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Guillermo Mota were fined Thursday for their run-in this week.

Major League Baseball will not suspend them. The amounts of the fines were not disclosed.

“My agent took care of it. He told me I got fined, but he didn’t tell me how much it was,” Mota said before the Dodgers opened a four-game series against Atlanta in Los Angeles. “I wasn’t suspended. I got fined. So why do I have to talk about it? That was two days ago. That’s in the past. I’m just here to do my job.”

Mota hit Fielder in the ninth inning of a 17-4 win Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, presumably as payback for Milwaukee’s Chris Smith grazing Manny Ramirez with a pitch two innings earlier.

Afterward, Fielder charged across a hallway toward the Dodgers’ clubhouse but was restrained by teammates and security. The teams played Wednesday night and there were no incidents.

“Last night he was like a raging bull. But nothing happened, so there’s no reason to suspend him,” Milwaukee teammate Ryan Braun said after the Brewers’ 4-1 in the series finale.

NCAA passes anti-betting policy

The NCAA approved a policy that would ban states, such as Delaware, from hosting championship events if they allow fans to bet on single games.

Chancellors and presidents from all three NCAA divisions approved the measure, saying it applies to “any session of an NCAA championship,” though it does not apply to states that allow parlay betting, lottery tickets, pull tabs and sports pools.

The move came one day after a federal judge denied a request by professional sports leagues and the NCAA to halt Delaware’s planned sports betting lottery until a legal challenge is resolved.
