Allegany beckons to gardeners

Thursday, August 06, 2009 |
Come Saturday, many homeowners will open their doors and gates for visitors in the Treasures of Allegany history and garden tour.
Sculpted floral and vegetable gardens are a main event at the tour featuring 22 sites. Visitors can see a log cabin, a vineyard and bee hives, and they will be able to create crafts with children in the Millicoma River Parks and Recreation Center.
Proceeds go toward Camp Millicoma, a former Girl Scout camp, the Allegany community is working to save.
The tour follows the river, reaching to Golden and Silver Falls State Park along the east fork and the fish hatchery interpretive center along the West Fork.
Each stop offers a peek into gardening techniques and history.
Howard and Linda Edwards will showcase garden antiques. While Cynthia Brophy, a retired teacher, showcases a potting shed modeled after a school house, which has been a popular stop on previous years’ garden tours.
Residents hope the tour will become a permanent annual fundraiser.
“It was so successful last year that we decided to try it again,” Brophy said.
