Golf course, airport officials begin push for larger aircraft at North Bend airport

BANDON — Southwest Oregon Regional Airport’s southbound flights are doing well enough for airport officials to begin lobbying for a larger aircraft.

In a genial “town hall” meeting between one of the top brass from SkyWest Airlines and community leaders, it was announced that flights to San Francisco from the North Bend airport have been operating largely without subsidies this year.

“We’re pushing on it,” Mike Lehman, Coos County Airport District chairman said in reference to the need for a bigger plane. “We’re talking about it.”

However, Lehman cautioned that talks are very preliminary and it’s unlikely the district will have a good economic argument for it for at least a year. He said the airport district will be in a better position to look at the possibility next year, assuming the economy has improved.

Michael Thompson, vice president of market development for SkyWest, listened to comments and suggestions from community leaders Tuesday during a luncheon at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, hosted by resort general manager Hank Hickox. The dialogue was generally upbeat, though Thompson did acknowledge the airline’s transition from Horizon Air — which dropped its North Bend service last year — hasn’t been smooth.

“We all need to admit that the first year was interesting,” said Thompson.

Among the areas for improvement is the need to better accommodate golfers and their cargo. Occasionally, golfers boarding the flight to North Bend to hit the links at Bandon Dunes are asked to offload clubs because of their potential to upset weight balance of the small aircraft.

It’s a frustration that could be resolved with a larger aircraft, Hickox said after the meeting.

Another need for improvement lies in the airline’s ridership to Portland, though Lehman noted northbound flights have been full this summer. He said the airport board is brainstorming solutions to boost northbound ridership year-round. One solution would be for the airline to establish an agreement with another airline service that offers more connecting flights, Lehman explained after the meeting.

Though none of that is likely anytime soon, he added.

“Those discussions are very complex,” he said.

Airport officials announced plans to step up marketing efforts to raise awareness about the airline and its services. The airport’s 2010 budget includes $100,000 for marketing, which came from a $400,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, Lehman said.

“SkyWest has put us into a new line of business and that is marketing,” said Gary LeTellier, Southwest Oregon Regional Airport executive director.

SkyWest, however, has no money for marketing the North Bend service. Thompson said that 96 percent of SkyWest’s business comes from contracting services with United Airlines and Delta.

“The people in this community will determine the success of the airport,” he said.
Who went?

Community leaders who attended the meeting at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort with SkyWest Airlines, included:

• Nikki Whitty, Coos County commissioner.

• Cathy Underdown, Bandon Chamber of Commerce president.

• Matt Winkel, Bandon city manager.

• Mike Lehman, Southwest Oregon Regional Airport District chairman.

• Jeff McKeown, Coos Bay mayor.

• Timm Slater, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce executive director.

• Gary LeTellier, Southwest Oregon Regional Airport executive director.

• North Bend Mayor Rick Wetherell was invited but did not attend.

• Staff from The World newspaper and KCBY-TV also attended.

2009 - whatever ... it was not name calling it was just stating a fact that you were being ignorant in your comment.

Krissy, Previous to Sky West I flew out of North Bend 1 to 2 times a week. At first I was glad when Sky West took the Northern route. It didn't take long to regret that!! Now the Eugene airport gets my business. Horizon is much more reliable.
P.S. name calling is unattractive!!

I don't know what ye'alls problem is??
in the last month and a half I have made 2 count them 2 trips IN and 2 count them 2 trips OUT of CB/NB airport and quess what they were ALL on time for both in and outbound trips. Maby I am not flying at the same times but they were all "on" short notice billings. I was happy with them all axcept the rate was higher than I thought it should have been. But that was the only problem I had..

I am just curious as to what the current size and weight specifications are for the current runways one and two. In other words how much bigger can planes get that are using this airport before they need to be expanded. A few years ago they had to fill the marsh land across from Pony Vilage to accomodate emergency landings and other contingencies of heavier planes. I always thought that when the airport was being upgraded from an old Army base that the airport should be on the North Spit. You could have made it as long as you wanted and accomodate anything. Bottom line is the airport has water at the end of the runways and can't be filled in further. Ponyvillage all but floats now. A plane with no brakes on runway two trying to land could either end up in the bay or Ponyvillage. On runway one it could be in the water either way. What does the FAA recommend? Interesting note here is Im flying out of Memphis in a couple hours to come home.

Bandon Dunes should pay their share if they want bigger planes for their golfers......

Thanks for the info and the welcome. Guess Its to late now for My sisters flight into North Bend.We will see what happens
For the record my flight into Portland was originally booked and confirmed. Then I was told it was canceled So I was bumped to a later flight that was then canceled ?. Then booked back to original flight. And its still three weeks away.So who knows what will happen between now and then. This is the current state of Air Travel

Krissy wrote on Aug 7, 2009 4:21 PM:

2009 - Now you are just being ignorant. Yes, I have flown several times out of this airport with SkyWest I also flew with Horizon. I have had one problem getting back into town. I am speaking from experience. Are you? Or are you just listening to what others have experience and living through them?

2009 wrote on Aug 7, 2009 3:17 PM:

Krissy, It sounds to me like you have only flown once. If you traveled more you would find that the problem is on going. Also your advice for summer and fall travel is wrong. That is when San Fran and N Bend both have BIG issues with fog. Some delays with airlines are normal. Cancels and delays everyday is not normal.

Pig Nuts wrote on Aug 7, 2009 2:49 PM:

If the Dunes would like bigger planes for their customers who are going through culture shock as a result of having to fly on commercial flights, I would suggest you subsidize the aircraft out of your own pocket not the taxpayers.

Who are you kidding anyway? The Dunes exploits the local community by paying near minimum wage jobs while pocketing an obscene windfall off of government subsidized programs. The local community receives zero benefit from the free pass the Dunes has received.

Even to consider dropping a nickel for the benefit of the Dunes is criminal when you consider how our education system has been eviscerated.

Tell us about all the great things the Dunes has done for the community. List them specifically.

Why should it come from our pockets?

krissy wrote on Aug 7, 2009 1:36 PM:

2009 - When I was stuck out of town at Christmas the local employees did whatever they could to try to get me home. They were more helpful than Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Eugene. You have to keep in mind the local employees are doing what they are told to do by their corporate office. Don't blame they employees locally look higher on the food chain!

2009 wrote on Aug 7, 2009 12:26 PM:

Also Krissy,
When Horizon canceled a flight the staff did the utmost to reaccomodate passengers. They bussed people to and from Portland or Eugene if they had to. The never just dropped people off in Eugene or other cities and told them they were on there own. What kind of customer service it that??

Krissy wrote on Aug 7, 2009 10:19 AM:

To William - Please do not listen to the negativity. I have flown into and out of our area. It is all based upon the weather in SF. In the summer and fall you should be just fine. In the winter and spring be sure to arrive early just in case of bad weather.

localguy wrote on Aug 7, 2009 10:17 AM:

as a local member of this community and someone who works for the dunes...i believe bigger planes would be very helpful. the airport does what it can to help out incoming visitors, but still the smaller planes cant carry as much luggage and extras. the private planes do not land at the main terminal so most people dont even see them coming in. its the visitors on commercial flights that are getting screwed with their belongings not the private flights. so i agree with Mr Hickcox and his wants for larger planes. this wont just benefit Bandon Dunes, but will benefit the local communtiy too. More incoming flights, larger planes...means more staff will be needed to accommodate them. so lets support this decision and help expand CB/NB area.

NB_Rez wrote on Aug 7, 2009 8:24 AM:

To WILLIAM - To answer your question, flights in and out of North Bend are never ontime with any consistency. At least that has been my observation. If you need to arrive here at a very specific time, I would suggest you fly into a larger airport such as PDX or Eugene and drive down. Not only will you have many more flight options, but those flights have a better track record of being on time. I wish you happy traveling and welcome you to the beautiful Oregon Coast.

NB_Local wrote on Aug 6, 2009 10:42 PM:

As with every job a lot of problems end up falling back on management. I have been to the airport quite a few times but have never seen the supervisor or manager appear when asked. I have even seen atleast two agents at a time outside smoking together while a single agent is inside working a line at the counter. Perhaps these people are the elusive management team. Does anyone know? They are conveniently not working during tough times. I think the agents are doing the best the can in their given situations. They do not seem to get a lot of backup help but I will keep my faith in them and continue to fly SkyWest. I have even gone to the airport and have seen atleast two agents at a time outside smoking together while a single agent is inside working a line at the counter. Perhaps these people are the elusive management team. Does anyone know?

Pig Nuts wrote on Aug 6, 2009 5:29 PM:

Delayed because the pilots have to hold their nose every time they come in to land. You are lucky to have a commercial airline bother to land here period let alone bringing in a competitor. Get ready to start spoon feeding the airline again come October when the Golfers quit coming. Who are you kidding? Should we pay more money for a bigger empty plane to start landing here? Get something to market & advertise, until then you have NO reason to receive visitors. What you think they are going to flood the place to come see your one & a half million dollar visitor center? Is there a doctor in the house, calling Marcus Welby MD, please assist some citizens with locating which end is up...

krissy wrote on Aug 6, 2009 3:44 PM:

Last I checked Horizon was not flying in and our of SF on a daily basis. Give them a break. I completely support our airport and the flights in and out. And yes, I have been delayed because of weather but it was not their fault. In fact our local agents were more help to me that the agents in other locations! Their customer service here at NB is great!

Just An Observer wrote on Aug 6, 2009 3:16 PM:

As a humorous saying goes, if you have the time, fly. If you are in a hurry, drive! A good driver can in 24 hours be anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, California, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, western Montana and parts of Arizona short of a major blizzard. You drive and you get there with your car in hand, everything you wanted to carry with you and you didn't have to deal with weather delays, security checks, cramped cabins, sick people stuck in a pressurized tube making you sick and you can smoke, eat, go to the bathroom and do anything else you'd like for personal comfort. Go buy a nice road car and enjoy the drive!

william wrote on Aug 6, 2009 2:33 PM:

Sorry to bother. But Ill ask again is there little chance of being on time flying into North Bend.
From your experiences do they cancel. many flights into the airport my sisters coming into town in sept. Took a chance and booked a flight into N.B. for the first time

NB_Rez wrote on Aug 6, 2009 12:45 PM:

To NB_LOCAL - Gimme a break! Horizon had it's issue with delays, but no where near what SkyWest has. Weather can account for some delays, but not all of them.

2009 wrote on Aug 6, 2009 12:08 PM:

NB_LOCAL says "SkyWest agents as they are doing their best in a situation they can't control."
If so they need to go back to school.
Even when it isn't weather delays, they claim weather so they don't have to compensate passengers. It seems as if the policy there is JUST SAY NO !!As far as I can tell customer service out there is non existent.

NB_Local wrote on Aug 6, 2009 10:15 AM:

Nothing can be done about the delayed flights our of the airport. Weather is something that cannot be controlled by SkyWest and it is silly to even blame them. The agents work hard to keep passengers happy and they do not enjoy the delays either. Just like Chicago, JFK, & Newark airports, San Francisco has delays due to weather. Please be patient with the SkyWest agents as they are doing their best in a situation they can't control.

Q wrote on Aug 6, 2009 9:44 AM:

“SkyWest has put us into a new line of business and that is marketing”

Gee, Gary. What a novel concept! Marketing? Sounds like you'd never heard of it before.

Perhaps THAT could be why flight attendance has been down. People in San Fran and Portland won't come just because you build it.

And this guy is in charge????

Embarrasing.

Common Sense wrote on Aug 6, 2009 7:03 AM:

Why not try something new, like running in the black (Making $$$), instead of running in the red (Losing $$$) every month as you are doin now, before getting some big ideas (Bigger planes)??? Brace yourself USA citizen tax payer (I smell another bail out on the horizon)...

P.S. I suggest getting another airline company to compete with Skywest for some long distance flights needed for this area instead of the basic San Fran flights mentality of today...

IWanttoknow wrote on Aug 5, 2009 5:26 PM:

Being a local, I Want To Know, why an accountant that has dealing with the corporation that runs Bandon Dunes, EtAl would make a statement that business is down at the Dunes, mainly due to the down turn of large corporation canceling their reservations. Is the NB/CB airport losing landing fees from the lack of Corp. Jets? If any of this is true, perhaps, we do need larger planes to service our out/incoming air freight and golfers, who lost their Lear Jets! It just my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.

Kay wrote on Aug 5, 2009 4:23 PM:

Thank you Mr. Hickcox for taking such a positive interest in our community.

It's wonderful having neighbors like you.

I'm proud of the airport board and the 'community leaders' that attended.

I'd like to thank all of those who attended, can the paper post who the community leaders were?

Wonderful to see such a can do attitude !

Just booked my first flight into CB . Now Im getting worried. Should I expect to be delayed on my flight in from San Francisco on a Wend. afternoon

Tank wrote on Aug 5, 2009 3:36 PM:

If anything, the airport should be trying to get AlaskaAir back. their reputation was SO much better. Skywest and their parent company can rarely get passengers to their destinations on time. Bring back AlaskaAir!

c.b. businessman wrote on Aug 5, 2009 12:53 PM:

I agree, more planes just means more cancellations, more delays, and more inconvenience for passengers.

NB_Rez wrote on Aug 5, 2009 11:14 AM:

What they should be pushing for is better timliness of flights. I don't think I've ever experienced a SkyWest flight out of North Bend leaving or arriving on time.
