Unkept promises

If Barack Obama fails to enact national health care, it will be because he sowed the seeds of its demise last Feb. 17 — the day the president, surrounded by Democratic leaders, signed the $787 billion economic-stimulus bill. In the legislative campaign leading up to that moment, both Obama and congressional Democrats made promises and took actions that are now coming back to haunt them as they pursue their goal of remaking the nation’s healthcare system.

“We have another trillion-dollar bill with the same strategy of passing it before people even have a chance to read it and know what’s in it,” says Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, who has emerged as a leader of the opposition in the healthcare fight. “It’s becoming clear that they misunderstood the economy, and now Americans are wondering whether they misunderstand health care.

That diminished trust can be traced directly to the stimulus. When Obama and his Democratic allies pushed it through Congress, they spoke constantly of “crisis” and warned of “catastrophe” if their bill was not passed. So the public, ready to give the new president a chance, supported him, even though the stimulus spent billions on the pet projects of Democratic lawmakers.

Now, to judge by the polls, a lot of people view things differently. In the latest Gallup survey, 64 percent say the stimulus has had no effect on their family’s financial situation. Twenty-two percent say it has made their financial situation worse. Just 14 percent say it has made their situation better.

The stimulus has also pushed the issue of the deficit near the top of the public’s concerns at precisely the time the Congressional Budget Office has concluded Obamacare would make the nation’s rising debt worse, not better. “Our annual deficit this year (is bigger) than all of the previous five years combined,” says Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In the House, Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner has used Obamacare as a chance to revisit the stimulus’ greatest hits, from the John Murtha “Airport for No One” to the San Francisco salt-marsh harvest mouse. Local Republicans around the country are sharpening their rhetoric as candidates gear up for next year’s elections.

Finally, the stimulus results so far have dealt a blow to Obama’s core credibility. He claimed his program would “create or save” millions of jobs, but now he can’t say with any specificity what it has done for employment. All people know is that he claimed the stimulus would keep the unemployment rate below 8 percent, and it is now headed toward 10 percent.

Although it’s debatable whether Obama, even at the height of his honeymoon, could have made the case that healthcare reform was the first thing he needed to do for the economy. But there’s no doubt the president spent much of his early political capital on the stimulus, and now he needs it back — badly. His problem is, a growing number of voters don’t want to make the same mistake twice.

Gee George some of us don't think Obama’s the enemy. Some of us think he might care for America and "all" its people. Not just the rich white guys. Or red neck Bigots. Nice narrow minded hate approach you listed there. By the way, how’s that well water. Mine was brown again. I am jealous of that. I wish I had some.

3. Whenever possible, go outside of the experience of the enemy.
4. Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.
5. Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.
6. A good tactic is one that your people enjoy.
7. A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.
8. Keep the pressure on with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose.
9. The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.
10. The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.
11. If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.
12. The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.
13. Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.

marymoonbeam; You did not say read something written by Glenn Beck. You do know that he has lost all his corporate sponsors. Yes, even the insurance companies that he is ranting for have backed away from his rhetoric. Glenn is so out there that to believe anything that man says is insane. The sky is falling! Dear Justice For All,

I didn't vote for Obama. I voted for Ron Paul, because he's one of the few in Congress that has the courage to speak the truth the American people - at least the ones who are listening. I didn't wait for Obama to get into office to sort him out - I did that before the election.

And if you think we've escaped a financial disaster then, please, carry on in your bliss.

Clinton's surplus was the product of a Republican congress and was inflated by a stock-price bubble that burst at the end of his term. Capital gains receipts were unusually high.
Government forecasts for continued surpluses depended on those tax payments continuing. The economy went into a drop instead as a result of the tech stock bubble burst. The 1st tax cut that president Bush proposed was working towards a economic turnaround and then 9-11 happened.
Unfortunately the so called
"peace dividend" that Clinton claimed after the Cold War left the military thin and massives increases in Defense spending needed to be done to fight jihadistan. That and the irresponsible spending by the Republican Congress that Bush failed to use his veto pen on resulted in the current budget defict.

Reedsport: Obama saved this country from entering into a true economic depression, on par with what we experienced in the 30's. You didn't think that was going to be free did you? The last administration bankrupted this country, so don't you dare blame Obama for fixing it. (And yes it was solely the last administration that is to blame, Clinton left office with a surplus I'll remind you). Spending money is not the issue, the issue is whether or not that money did what it was suppose to do...which it did, it stabilized the economy and put this country on a path of solid recovery. Any money spent to build America back up is money well invested.

If Obama really knew what he was doing:

The stimulus package would start to show signs of impact, the stock market would be up 30%, the liquidity crises would be receding and the general implosion of the world financial system would have been averted, he would have announced and started the closing of Gitmo, our troops would be out of routine patrols in Iraq, car manufacturing would be up, he would have broken through new barriers in appointing a new supreme court justice, he would have announced America's intention to negotiate an end to strategic nuclear stockpiles and 6 months into the administration he would have changed the entire tone of international relations opening up more discussion and less confrontation with our friends and allies.

But we are now approaching the 7th month of the Obama Presidency and the President (who is either not smart enough or not tough enough depending on your predilection) has not achieved any one of . . . .

Oops my bad.

People are being too critical of our president because they continue to live in a fantasty world of instant gratification. President Obama didn't fix everything right away. And how could he after the hack job that Bush did on our economy? So what I'm saying is he CAN'T fix it right away though he's trying his hardest. I for one, as a member of the middle class, am relieved to be receiving larger paychecks with fewer taxes being taken out of them. And what am I doing with that money? I'm turning around and putting it right back into our businesses by buying. Give Obama a chance. At least a few of us are still loyal.

Obama inherited a total mess. Not one made by a "Party" but one made by the gross mismanagement of our political leaders. I don't blame a 'party' for what has happened... I blame corporate greed, lack of any sort of morality, and so many millions of people wanting what they were not willing to work for - and living above their means - then leaving us who has lived modestly holding the bag. Don't look at the politicians to lean up this mess... Look at the corporation that is spending all of our money in another country. Look at the neighbor that has lived high on the hog and is now filing bankruptcy. The one who has 6 kids in foster care while they 'work on their plan' and don't pay any support. The one that 'bought' a house that they couldn't afford. The moralization of our nation is the only thing that will bring us out of this.

Justice for All wrote on Aug 8, 2009 10:34 AM:

It's amazing that just after 200 days of Obama's presidency, people like "WOW" and "Al" are ready to unequivocally state that Obama's clear agenda is to "take away or limit our freedom," and that we are on the path to "certain financial ruin."

I guess the reason for these snap judgments is that you can't objectively look at the economic reports and financial numbers indicating that Obama's quick actions stopped what could have been America's second Great Depression. History is on Obama's side. Inaction in the face of an economic meltdown is deadly; see the 1929 inaction leading to Great Depression, see also Japan's economic collapse of the 1990s.

"NOGOD" Not too many people will argue that under Bush the country garnered a huge abount of debt. But, please try to remember that Bush is no longer the president and enter the present. Do you, just to get even with the past, want to exasserbate the past debt by allowing Obama to increase it even more? I certainly don't and find it amazing that a whole cadre of Bush haters would allow just that. Your reasoning is beyond the pale.
P.S. I am a registered Independent bcause I don't really trust either party anymore. Read "Common Sense" by Glenn Beck and you will understand why. It calls all politicians to the carpet.

This isn't much about republican versus democrat anymore. I'm tired of being accused that, since I'm a conservative, I must have voted for Bush. I didn't. I think Bush's presidency was a bust but his pales in comparison to what Obama is doing. The grass roots of America is coming back because neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are producing what they promised. I think that it is terrible that Obama promised during his campaign that he would post a bill a certain number of days before he would sign it and allow the public to comment according to their views. This has not been done as he promised. He hasn't. Why? because his agenda is already clear: to take away or limit our freedom.

Justice for All wrote on Aug 7, 2009 12:43 PM:

No one in Obama's administration is happy having to increase the deficit. Wouldn't it be nice if Bush's decisions hadn't put this country in the state that Obama inherited it? Wouldn't it be been nice if Bush had used the budget surplus to provide health insurance for Americans who can't afford it instead of sending a check to the richest 1% of our population.

Obama's critics use the powerful tools of fear and lies to convince lower income Americans that Obama's spending will destroy our country. The critics go so far as to convince elderly Americans that Obama's health plan will kill them. How crazy is that if you actually think about it?

Justice for All wrote on Aug 7, 2009 12:41 PM:

Please, try to be honest about what Bush did during his presidency. Fact: when Bush took office he inherited a $431 billion budget surplus. During his first year in office (2001), Bush passed a $1.35 trillion tax cut that gave $53,000 a year to the top 1% richest Americans. Then in 2003, when the budget surplus was gone, Bush passed another round of tax cuts, this time cutting the tax rates on capital gains and dividends (taxes that mostly effecting the wealthiest). Another fact: Bush inherited a projected ten-year budget surplus of $5.6 trillion and left office with a ten-year deficit of $6 trillion. And what did he accomplish? When Bush left, 5 million more Americans were below the poverty line then when he took office. He took our economy and drove it into the ground by valuing big corporations (many with ties to his administration), at the expense of everyday Americans. How many people lost their health care coverage during Bush's watch? 9 million Americans. I guess this doesn't matter to Obama's critics. It's easy to complain about his spending when you look at it in a vacuum.

NB_Rez wrote on Aug 7, 2009 11:55 AM:

To JUSTICE FOR ALL - Are you blind to the fact that Obama is spending like crazy and eventually the bill will come due? Who do you think will end up paying that? It will be US, the taxpayers. And to top it off, there is really no proof that the stimulus money has helped, at least not at the levels Obama promised us when he was pushing for support in passing the stimulus bill. I for one am sick and tired of forking over more than 50% of my paycheck in some form of tax and getting nothing in return.

Tag Urit wrote on Aug 7, 2009 8:13 AM:

October 1, 2008, Obama, Biden, and Clinton voted in favor of the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program. Three left leaning republican senators from the east coast voted for the TARP money. ALL democrats supported the bill. Most republicans voted against the bill because they were voting for a bill 800 pages in length, and only had it in their hand for 5 hours, given to them at 3:00 in the a.m. They backed the bill in principal, but refused to sign it blindly. At the time, they were beat up in the press for not reacting, now that we look back , they seem to have shown some wisdom.

Dear Justice For All.

Please, if you will, defend the DOUBLING of our national debt in less than six months. Bush may have spent money on a war, but what he did pails in comparison to the carnage this administration has done - with all the support required from lapdogs Reid, Pelosi, Dodd, Frank, etc., etc. One needs to look outside the boundries of the U.S. to really understand what is happening. Pay close attention to what the Chinese and Japanese are doing with the U.S. dollar and it should...should...raise the hairs on your neck. Regardless, our fearless leaders continue to lead us down the path of certain financial ruin. Unbelievable.

Justice for All wrote on Aug 5, 2009 3:13 PM:

Thanks to the World's staff for finding another blindly conservative editorial to print. It's great that the World scours conservative papers, like the Washington Examiner, for editorials that attempt to rile up low-income white Americans by citing to Republican Senators' statements as fact.

Would it really be so hard to for the paper to report objectively? I guess it's hard to complain about the deficit spending if you are honest and look at how bad things could have gotten if President Obama hadn't acted; and don't forget that the $787 billion stimulus plan included $300 billion of tax cuts pushed for by Republicans. But where were these complaints when Bush was spending more than a trillion dollars on the Iraq war while at the same time lowering taxes?

So let me get the World's position straight: as long as the money is spent on war, it's okay, but spending money on domestic projects and health care is destroying our county.

How about a little objectivity, Coos County deserves it.

George Soros wrote on Aug 5, 2009 11:41 AM:

Now we see why they were sneaking around in the middle of the night and not allowing people in on the debate or take time to READ THE BILL.
And now we see that they hadn't really given a lot of thought to the healthcare "solution" they've been championing for years. This just reinforces the image of throwing money at problems. It doesn't matter if it works or whether you can afford it or not, if there's a problem you throw money at it OR you're a selfish uncaring low-life.
The rooster has come home to roost.
