MYRTLE POINT — Not bad for their first year at the fair.

You read about Cheyenne Nichols, 9, and her 7-year-old sister Courtney Nichols of Myrtle Point on Tuesday. The newcomers brought their cows to the Coos County Fair to compete for the first time.

Three days into it Thursday, they were sweeping the competition.

The girls are raising twin heifers named Abigail and Olivia, born about 14 months ago.

Courtney showed in the open class matching her against competitors of all ages. She and her heifer won grand champion ribbon in the other breeds category.

Her sister Cheyenne’s heifer won reserve champion short horn in the confirmation class. She also received the champion novice showmanship award.

Together, the girls won a class called produce of dam, which is for animals born in the same year. Since the heifers are twins, they fall into this category as well.

The responsibility has paid off for the girls who have been feeding, washing, watering and walking their heifers all year long, their mother, Kayce Nichols, said. The girls can’t wait to come back to the fair next year.

“They started out pretty nervous,” she said. “As soon as they got that first ribbon, they were all smiles.”

Nichols said her daughters had an outstanding pair of heifers.

“Their animals were really well trained and they were really well behaved,” she said.

Competitions wrap up today at the Coos County Fair.
