The South Coast’s 14-year-old prep all-stars won their Southern Oregon State Babe Ruth Tournament in Grants Pass on Sunday to advance to the regionals in Moscow, Idaho.

South Coast edged host Josephine County 8-7 in the championship game Sunday to clinch the title.

“That was pretty cool,” said John Qualman, one of the coaches for the team. “They hit the ball well and played good baseball.”

Facing temperatures over 100 degrees, South Coast took an 8-5 lead when Matt Miranda hit a three-run home run.

Josephine County rallied with two runs in the seventh inning, and had runners on first and second with one out. South Coast third baseman Josh Iabichello backhanded a grounder, stepped on the bag to force out the runner coming over from second, and threw to first baseman Nick Cole to complete the game-ending double play.

South Coast beat Josephine County 5-4 on the opening day of the tournament, and then beat Klamath Falls 15-8 on Saturday.

Ryan Smith and Alex Snow did most of the pitching for South Coast in the tournament.

The 10-team regional tournament starts next Monday in Idaho.

13-year-old prep

South Coast Babe Ruth’s 13-year-old all-star team also reached the championship round of its state tournament at Klamath Falls, but wasn’t able to take the state title.

The team lost to host Klamath Falls 12-2in the championship game Sunday.

Klamath Falls also handed South Coast its other loss in the tournament.

South Coast won twice on Saturday to advance to the final round.

It’s the first time local organizers can remember having teams in the championship round at all three levels of Babe Ruth — 13- to 15-year-olds, 14-year-old prep and 13-year-old prep.
