It's been a decade since a local Babe Ruth team qualified for the Northwest regional tournament.
It's time for a new era.
This summer two teams will make a trip to regionals, after each won its state championship Sunday.
The South Coast Nationals, a 13- to 15-year-old team, won the Southern Oregon State Tournament at Clyde Allen Field on Sunday, beating Klamath Falls 9-4 in the championship game.
Doug Molzahn, South Coast's third pitcher in the game, did not allow a run over the final three innings, as the Nationals preserved an early lead in the championship game.
The title earned the Nationals a trip to Centralia, Wash., for the Northwest regional tournament, starting next Monday.
The Nationals set up the win Sunday with a dramatic two-out rally in the seventh inning Saturday for a 14-13 victory over Umpqua Valley.
In Grants Pass, the South Coast Babe Ruth 14-year-old prep team won its state tournament, to earn a trip to the regional tournament in Moscow, Idaho.
Playing in 102-degree weather, South Coast got a three-run home run by Matt Miranda to take an 8-5 lead and held on for an 8-7 victory.
