The South Coast will have half the teams in this weekend’s Southern Oregon State Babe Ruth Tournament for players 13 to 15 years old.

Just four teams are in the competition this year, with the Rogue Valley area not sending up a group.

South Coast Babe Ruth, the host organization for the tournament, has a pair of squads, including the generally older South Coast Nationals and the somewhat younger South Coast Americans.

The double-elimination tournament at Clyde Allen Field in North Bend starts with a pair of games Friday and concludes Sunday with either one or two contests. The winner earns a spot in the regional tournament at Centralia, Wash.

South Coast Babe Ruth also has teams entered in the 14-year-old prep tournament at Grants Pass and the 13-year-old prep tournament at Klamath Falls. Those squads also have a chance to advance to regionals, in Moscow, Idaho, and Bozeman, Mont., respectively.

The South Coast Nationals include several players from both Myrtle Point and the Bay Area team Fourmile Logging. Players from those two groups combined to form a team that won a number of weekend tournaments during the summer.

Most of the players on the South Coast Nationals are 15, while many of the players on the South Coast Americans are 14.

The South Coast Americans are up first Friday, facing Umpqua Valley, which encompasses all the rural areas of Douglas County from Drain to Canyonville and east of Roseburg to Glide. Those squads open the tournament at 5:30 p.m.

The late game Friday, slated to start at 8:30 p.m., features the South Coast Nationals against Klamath Falls.

The winners of Friday’s games meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, while the losers play an elimination game at 1 p.m. The loser of Saturday’s first game and the winner of the second contest meet at 4 p.m. Saturday in another elimination game, for a chance to advance to the championship round.

Sunday’s schedule calls for a game at 10 a.m., with a second game at 1 p.m., if necessary.

All games are seven innings, with a 10-run mercy rule in effect after the fifth inning

Admission for the tournament is $8 per day for adults and $6 for children 7 through 12. A tournament pass is $15 for adults or $25 for families for the entire weekend. Because Clyde Allen Field has an extensive concession stand, and money raised through food sales helps pay for umpires, field maintenance and other tournament costs, no outside food will be allowed in the stadium.

South Coast Babe Ruth features teams in Florence, Reedsport, Bandon, Coquille, Myrtle Point and the Bay Area. All the cities provided at least one player for a local team competing this weekend at one of the three sites.
