The 2009 Coos County Fair kicks off on Tuesday, July 28, and will run through Saturday, Aug. 1, at the county fairgrounds in Myrtle Point.
Fair admission
Admission to the 2009 Coos County Fair for adults Tuesday through Thursday is $8, Friday and Saturday is $10; children 6-12 are $3 and under 5 years old are free. The carnival all-day wristband is $25 per day, five-day passes are $35 and parking is $5. Rodeo box seats are $30 for individuals or $200 for the whole box.
All area McKay's and Price Ôn Pride markets are selling the carnival wristbands at a discounted price of $22 and five-day passes for $20. They will be on sale until Saturday, July 25.
Recycle at the fair
For the first time, the Coos County Fair, in partnership with J & L Sanitation, will be offer recycling during the five-day event. Ten marked recycling bins for beverage bottles and cans will be located in picnic areas, at the campground, around the food vendor and in then animal arena areas.
ÒWe hope to be able to divert the majority of single-use beverage containers from landfills, thereby reducing the negative environmental impact of this community event,Ó Marley Bice, an AmeriCorps volunteer, said in a press release.
J&L Sanitation will donate the recycling bins and bags, and will haul away the recyclables collected during the event.
Cluck Off grilling contest
Foster Farms is giving amateur backyard grillers the chance to strut their stuff during the third Foster Farms Big Cluck grill-off, July 31, at the Coos County Fair.
All amateur backyard chefs are invited to compete in this year's contest by signing up at the fair's Web site,
www.oregonstatefair.org. A full day of excitement in store as local grill masters compete for prizes and the title of ÒBBQ Guru.Ó
First prize is a Traeger Lil Tex Wood Pellet Grill and a ribbon; a prize package valued at more than $700.
Second place will receive a Kershaw Knife Set and a ribbon; a prize package valued at more than $250.
Third place winners will receive a grill accessory set and a ribbon, a prize package valued at more than $75.
Each contestant will be required to bring his or her own grill.
Rodeo with ATVs
Coos ATV & Cycle and the Coos County Fair will present the first ATV Rodeo at 6 p.m., Tuesday. Check in is at 5 p.m.
The rodeo will feature a barrel obstacle course, and timed drag races. Entry fee is $10 per event with a 100 percent payback for first place winners. There also will be other prizes and giveaways.

Goat raffle
The Coos County OSU Extension will raffle off a 2-year-old Nigerian dwarf doe goat. The prize was donated by Carrie Harris of Tulatin Acres in Myrtle Point. The prize is valued at $250.
This breed of small dairy goats are good milk producers and are generally good with children, a press release said.
Raffles tickets are $3 each or two for $5 and are available at Coos County OSU Extension, Ohlsen Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point and at the Coos County Fair. The drawing will be the evening of Aug. 1 after the pig scramble. Winners do not need be present to win. All proceeds go to 4-H. For more information, call 572-5263.
MP Project Graduation barbecue
Project Graduation will host a barbecue at the Coos County Fair. The event will help raise money for the drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free party following 2010 Myrtle Point High School graduation. Half chicken, grilled over an open barbecue pit will be served with corn on the cob, a roll and drink for $9. The barbecue will be during regular fair hours in front of the grove and in front of the arena.
Family nutrition activities
Activities for kids 4- to 10-years-old will be held in the grove from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. There also will be healthy recipe ideas for adults.

4-H starter animal program
Coos County 4-H offers scholarships to help young people purchase their project animals.
Over the past 20 years, 93 people have participated in the program. Participatants must apply in order to particpate.
