COOS BAY — It wasn’t a good night to sing Taylor Swift.

In the first elimination round of Bay Area Teen Idol, both Allison Warrick and Chalky James performed Swift’s “Love Story,” and both were eliminated.

Judge Edward Martin told Warrick he didn’t care for the song because it was so monotonous.

Warrick, a two-time contestant, said the competition is more difficult this year because the talent is even better than last year’s impressive field.

“I just feel sorry for the judges,” said Warrick, 15, of North Bend. “I’m not glad I’m out, but I’m glad no one else is.”

James, 13, of Coquille, briefly forgot the words during her performance, but her fellow contestants helped her quickly find her place.

Though the top three scorers were not announced during the show, they were among those called forward before the elimination: Marissa Cato, Star Moralez and Destyni Fuller.

Moralez, who sang Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One,” and Fuller, who sang LeAnn Rimes’ “On the Side of Angels,” were both finalists last year.

Cato, meanwhile, quickly established herself as the most impressive newcomer with her performance of Christina Aguilera’s “I Turn To You.”

“I’ve had a lot of practice with that song,” said Cato, 13, explaining she sang it at her parents’ wedding as well as a spaghetti feed and a talent show. “It’s something I know people will like.”

The song was one of several ballads by singers known for their powerful voices to appear during the show. Karissa Fults and Amanda Waldrop both sang Celine Dion songs, while Ally Putas tackled the Whitney Houston version of “I Will Always Love You.” But Cato of Coos Bay pulled off the style the best.

“I love singing big,” she said. “I can’t sing small.”

The category for the week was post-1990 pop.

Other new contestants to watch include Thaddeus Miller, Emma Wampler and Putas. But all showed improvement over last week, judges said. The most oft-heard comment from judges — Kim Handsaker, Martin and Dennis Lindahl — was how much more comfortable contestants appeared on stage.

The contest continues to draw large crowds. More than 275 people attended, according to organizer Stephanie Kilmer.

In just two weeks, Miller — the only boy in the contest — has developed a following and finds himself fending off attentive female fans.

“Sometimes I have to hide,” he said.
