COOS BAY — Health care reform advocates served up music and meat Tuesday night as part of an effort to raise awareness about a single-payer system.

Folksingers from Grants Pass, California, Texas and Pennsylvania urged people to call their federal legislators, holding a placard with a giant phone number to emphasize the point. Members of the Coos/Curry Single Payer Action Committee gathered signatures, handed out pamphlets and grilled burgers and hot dogs.

The organizers favor a single-payer health care system, arguing it would save money by cutting out insurance companies and spending tax dollars on health services.

It was one of more than two dozen stops along the Sing Out for Single Payer Road Show, featuring folksinger/activist Anne Feeney and the Green Mountain Grass band.

Helping to organize the event was Rick Staggenborg, a VA psychiatrist at the North Bend clinic. He suggested the issue of promoting a single-payer system shouldn’t be a divisive one.

“Everybody is getting the shaft in the current non-system,” he said.

A single-payer system creates a pool of funds to pay for health care, rather than other proposals that involve private health insurance. Staggenborg argued such a system would encourage patients to see a doctor sooner, so they could prevent larger, more expensive  problems from developing.

The musicians and Staggenborg both complained that U.S. elected officials have accepted millions of dollars from insurance companies in campaign donations and are expected to produce reform. They are skeptical officials can objectively do that.

Staggenborg suggested some of the reform proposals being considered are little more than bailouts for insurance companies.

“They can’t make it on their own and they aren’t even necessary,” he said.

Joining in the evening’s festivities were several members of the Veterans for Peace chapter of Bandon. Bob Fischer said he came along because of his concern for veterans who are out on the street in need of health care.

“The VA doesn’t seem to take care of them,” he said. “Single-payer could.”

Before leading into the open number with lyrics like “The rich folks live and the poor folks die,” Feeney explained that she’s fought for a number of causes over the years, including anti-war and pro-labor. She said health care is in critical need of reform, though she’s encouraged by the number of people who have come out since the tour started July 2 in Southern California.

“If everyone put in as much energy as these musicians, we would win,” she said.

yeah the sweet songs of socialism.
I have grown up in Germany, with a national health system that is a financial blood sucker costing now 28% of wages before taxes. The service is VERY poor, hours long waits in doctors' offices, long waiting times before surgeries, scarce and insufficiently trained hospital staff, etc.
My mother-in-law, was dying from cancer, and did neither get proper care, they have no hospice, nor enough pain medication, because it was too costly. And she had paid into the system all her life!

dadochipper wrote on Jul 22, 2009 1:14 PM:

My point exactly Amadeus...it IS because it is for profit. My point is that having the government PAY for it will not solve that particular problem, it will only saddle Americans with even more burdens. How will that help?

Rather than national health care I would personally rather see some way to cut the costs.

And Kay, if this goes through, you will have even MORE poor people - layoffs will certainly occur when small business cannot absorb the cost of mandated coverate; lower and middle class people will pay even more and get nothing for it.

You are basing your hopes on a rushed-to-the-table plan by a government that has no clue how to successfully run medical related programs.

Cut the costs...then address universal care.

KEEN said,

"I'm tired of lining their pockets and the pockets of insurance companies."

Oh really?

You don't think the insurance companies are practically FROTHING at the mouth at the prospect that MILLIONS of uninsured Americans would now HAVE to purchase health insurance?

Don't you people get it? This isn't about affordable health coverage for America.

This is all about politics as usual, and paying off the insurance company lobbyists.

And all the bleeding hearts are falling for it!

Hey I'm all for trying to straighten the health care mess out, but this is CRAZY. Rushing new legislation through in a matter of monhts?

Like I said politics as usual! Change anybody?

There has to be a better way than FORCING people to buy insurance, subsidizing those who cannot, and penalizing those who do not.

you said it all Reedsport. You heard it on Fox noise. You must believe in the easterbunny, the toothfairy and santa clause too.

Amadeus, whenever the 5 different Bills under the "Universal HB" is finished that Pres. Obama wants to hurry up and pass in August, (that he has never even read because it's not even finished being written yet), IS finished read pages 35 - 40 where it talks about MANDANTORY guidance counselors for aged people (over 60). Also I heard, yep, on Fox News (it wouldn't be talked about any other news maybe TNN or Lou Dobbs)that none of this "Universal Health Care" can even be facilitated until 2013. Are you over 55?

Keen wrote on Jul 21, 2009 4:56 PM:

I'm not an Obamatron, I happen to think he's Bush-lite. I'm just here trying to figure out why poor people that claim to have family values would be against something that would be so helpful to so many people.

I'm tired of the poor people in this country voting for the rich to get richer. Who cares that Doctors won't be able to buy 2 Mercedes a year under single payer medicine? Now they'll only be able to afford one. I'm tired of lining their pockets and the pockets of insurance companies. WE already know why health care costs so much, it's called GREED.

Ever notice that the guy that owns Fox news is one of the richest guys in the world? You think maybe he might have a "hidden" agenda to keep his wealth? Poor republicans of Coos County.... you are being manipulated to keep the rich, rich, and the poor, poor. Stop voting against yourselves and try to figure out the true meaning of family values.

amadeus wrote on Jul 21, 2009 4:06 PM:

we know already why health care is so expensive..it is because it is a for profit enterprise. the greedy corporations and insurance companies want us to get sick so they get richer, then they want us to die when their profit margins are at risk. get a clue.

dadochipper wrote on Jul 21, 2009 2:19 PM:

and Kay...what of you Obamatrons...who hang on his every word like he is some sort of God? Talk about sheep....

What we NEED is to make our system more EFFICIENT. Weed out those that abuse the system so others that need help actually get it.

My problem with a national system of healtchare is that the government would run it. If you think that wouldnt be a mess you havent been paying attention to the last 50 years of government programs. Medicare, Medicaid, etc are ineffective dinosaurs. A national health care plan would be more of the same.

How about we focus on why health care is so expensive and address that first?

amadeus wrote on Jul 21, 2009 1:29 PM:

kay, keen, I''d like to meet you someday, you are not typical. Not of the blind deaf and dumb followers of fox news. you notice inaction jackman had nothing to say about the police, fire dept, road systems, consumer protection, or any of the other SOCIAL programs...he just keeps on repeating the talking points of Limbaugh, Beck scarborough and the ilk, railing on at "socialized medicine"...no thinking of his own, simply amazing.

When you ask them to elaborate you get the 'deer in the headlights' look. They have no idea what it means, they just follow the herd.

Dumbing down of America?

Complete.

It worked.

Keen wrote on Jul 21, 2009 8:29 AM:

We're currently number 36 in the world of health care in this world. All countries that have socialized medicine are above us in the care of their people. How much more proof do you people need then that? It works, and works WELL all over the world. Why not here?

Another thing, Obama, your president, has said many times, if you like the insurance you already have there will be no changes.

Of course I suspect that 1/2 the people on here that are protesting this don't even have medical insurance and they'll be in front of me to see the doctor.

Now, turn off that FOX news. Your brains have rotted out because of it.

dadochipper wrote on Jul 21, 2009 6:13 AM:

Amadeus.... thank you for proving my point...who said ANY of those programs are run WELL? Look at Medicaid, Medicare, welfare in general. Can you really say they are EFFICIENTLY? Over regulation and intrusion into our lives. While leftists whined about Bush "taking our rights" they clap their hands while the government sticks its hands into our pockets for even more.

The constitution says the government is to "promote the...general welfare" of the population. That does not mean that everyone, in general should BE on welfare.

Reedsport wrote on Jul 20, 2009 4:39 PM:

Policing, military protection, and the like are legitimate responsibilities of the government, something only a government can do.
The legitimacy of the state (or lack thereof) lends itself to the force sometimes necessary to protect the public and enforce the law.
(That's why vigilantes are outside the law.)

Health care is not something only the government can do. It is something legitimately done by private entities. (Never mind that it's often done better by private entities, too. Compare the survival rates for cancer and heart disease in Canada and the U.S.)

amadeus wrote on Jul 20, 2009 2:00 PM:

so, Dadochipper, you don't rely on the police? the fire department? our public roads? our subsidized utilities? you don't benefit from regulation of medical practices and medicine? from food safety? consumer protection from defective products? never sent your children to public school? Does anyone really think that those who cannot afford food while they raise families in places where there is double digit unemployment deserve to starve? Can you afford to hire your own army if an enemy threatens us? what do you think these programs are? Socialism, sillyhead.

Dadochipper wrote on Jul 20, 2009 11:38 AM:

why do those that love socialized health care seem to think anyone that opposes the proposal also supports the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

What makes ANYONE think the government can run this efficiently and cost effectively? Will the government suddenly become fiscally responsible and wise?

all you have to do is look at the picture with this article...they have not left the 60's. They are just glad they have something to protest about.

Put your bongs away and get real.

If you libs want socialized health care you can all get together and voluntarily do it and not point guns at those of us that don't , and make no mistake whether its you personally pointing a gun at someone or "voting" for someone to point a gun at someone to take there money its wrong .

Gary wrote on Jul 18, 2009 8:34 AM:

We are already murdering babies, old people will be next because they will not be allowed medical procedures for their longevity. Then they make such statements as, maybe it's time you move to another country. Now that is real ignorance.

Keen wrote on Jul 18, 2009 6:42 AM:

What I find fascinating is that none of these GOP supporters found anything wrong w/Cheney spending BILLIONS to fund an illegal invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, but all of a sudden they are UP in ARMS over the possibility of our national debt going up due to something that actually HELPS the citizens of this country.

That is Fox News at work. Brainwashing people to believe, war and KILLING is a GOOD thing to spend money on but HEALTH CARE for the poor citizens of this country is a BAD thing to spend money on.

That can only mean one thing, the republicans are death mongers that would rather kill then help people. That's what you people call "family values"??

you offend me standdowngal. I won't be 60 for 15 more years I am fortunate enough to HAVE excellent health care. But, you offensive person, I also happen to have a SEVERE heart condition. I DO take heart pills but even with extensive insurance, most of the rest of my pay check is going to paying for the surgery and pacemaker I had to have put in and the copays for my heart pills. i wonder how many others in my position you just offended.

I think we can dispense with the "our children and our grandchildren" cliches. In the interest of self-preservation the unions and our arrogant politicians have bankrupted this country to the point of no return. And I really wish the Democrats would stop saying they "inherited" this mess from the Republicans. The Dems owned the House and Senate during Bush's last term. They owned the budget and could have stopped this. But they didn't. Instead, they locked arms with Acorn, literally and figuratively crawled into bed with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and fueled this catastrophe. Many of them should be in prison for what they've done.

AMEN TO AL!!

Amadeus: I hope that you are not over 60 right now, because if this passes Obama has already told you what he wants you to do if you get cancer or have heart problems. Cancer: go to a hospice and prepare to die. Breast and prostate cancer patients in Canada and England die younger and at a quicker rate while waiting for treatment if they are not denied it.

Heart problems, take a pill and go home. LISTEN TO HIS SPEECHES. THEY SHOULD SCARE THE PANTS OFF YOU.

Anyone sticking to a party line on this discussion is really out of touch with reality.

Can ANYone grasp what $1 TRILLION dollars of debt is? I can't. And, apparently no one in Congress can either. Because they're all acting like national healthcare is a hundred dollar tab. And, in spite of major alarm bells going off from the Budget Office, economically challenged Harry Reid regards CBO Director Doug Elmendorf as nothing more than an unncessary hurdle to healthcare "reform."

Personally, I'd rather risk having NO healthcare than deal with the inevitable economic collapse that comes with a two TRILLION deficit. In that scenario, no one will be able to afford healthcare except for our elected elitist politicians who continue to pillar and plunder with impunity.
