Thousands turn out for McNair funeral

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Thousands turned out in Tennessee to say goodbye to Steve McNair, and people in his native state did the same Sunday to give the former NFL quarterback one of the biggest funerals in recent Mississippi history.
At least 4,500 turned out, though organizers anticipated a capacity crowd of 8,000 at Reed Green Coliseum on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Most of McNair’s hometown of Mount Olive also arrived thanks to buses rented by the McNairs, and hundreds came out Friday night for a visitation. A private burial followed in Mount Olive.
McNair was shot and killed on the Fourth of July by Sahel Kazemi, a 20-year-old girlfriend who then shot herself in the head.

Mavericks sign Kidd to 3-year contract
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks announced that free agent point guard Jason Kidd agreed to a three-year contract on Saturday, five days after owner Mark Cuban confirmed that Kidd was returning. Kidd agreed to a dealt worth more than $25 million.
The 37-year-old could finish his career where it started in 1994 — with the Mavericks. The No. 2 pick out of California returned to Dallas in a trade last year with New Jersey, where he made two trips to the NBA finals with the Nets.
U.S. under-19 team wins gold medal
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — The United States broke an 18-year gold medal drought by beating Greece 88-80 on Sunday to win the FIBA under-19 world basketball championships.
Kansas’ Tyshawn Taylor had 18 points and five steals to lead the U.S. to its first victory at the world junior tournament since it claimed the gold medal in Canada in 1991.

Gatti’s wife formally accused in murder
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian authorities detained the wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti and formally accused her Sunday of killing him at a posh seaside resort in Brazil.
Police said 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody after contradictions in her interrogation and presented a formal accusation against her. Prosecutors later will decide whether she will be charged.
The former junior welterweight champion was apparently strangled with the strap of a purse, which was found at the scene with blood stains.

NBC to bid on television rights
DENVER (AP) — NBC plans on bidding for rights to televise the 2014 and 2016 Olympics despite the U.S. Olympic Committee’s decision to build a competing Olympic network.
NBC spokesman Brian Walker said Sunday that nothing had changed in the network’s intentions to bid for the games.
Because of the rough economy, the International Olympic Committee has postponed the bidding for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics, likely until after the 2016 Games are awarded in October.
NBC has televised all Olympics since 2000.
Second positive test for gold medalist
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Track gold medalist Rashid Ramzi’s backup sample tested positive for a banned blood-booster, the head of Bahrain’s Olympic Committee told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The 1,500-meter champ and four other athletes tested positive for the blood-boosting drug CERA in April retests of their “A” samples from the Beijing Games.
Ramzi claims he is innocent and Bahrain’s Olympic Committee has hired a team of lawyers to assist Ramzi in arguing his case.
