Food convoy will cruise through town

Monday, July 13, 2009 |
There’ll be a convoy in Coos Bay and North Bend today, carrying nutritional reinforcements for hungry families.
The Food Care-A-Van, sponsored by Oregon Coast Community Action, Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club and The World, wraps up today.
Forty businesses and government agencies in the area have been filling food bins for more than a month. A procession of vehicles will drive the groceries to the South Coast Food Share, where Rotarians and other volunteers will unload the vehicles.
But first comes a victory lap through Coos Bay and North Bend.
“It’s a little celebration for the community’s hard work and generosity,” World Publisher/ Editor Clark Walworth said.
The food will go to 33 pantries in Coos and Curry counties. As of Friday afternoon, volunteers already had delivered an estimated 1,047 pounds to Food Share, collected from participating businesses that couldn’t attend today’s Care-A-Van.
The total amount collected won’t be known until after today’s event. But Care-A-Van coordinator Dawn Smith had some advance details.
Macy’s employees gathered 320 pounds by Friday, she said. Across town, North Bend city workers ran out of boxes to contain the food. More boxes were being delivered so firefighters could load the food onto a truck in time for today’s delivery.
