Bring your instrument. Oregon Coast Lab Band is hosting a two-week jazz camp starting Monday.

Mike Turner, the musical director for Lab Band and at Southwestern Oregon Community College, will lead the camp, which will feature instruction for school-age musicians of all skill levels.

“No experience required. We’ll find a level for them to participate,” said Ray Sanford, Lab Band Board of Directors president.

The cost is $10, which is the monthly fee to be a member of the organization. That membership gives young musicians 50 to 60 hours of instruction a month, Sanford said.

The camp will be held in Lab Band’s rehearsal building, 1875 Virginia Ave., in North Bend a block away from Safeway. Go around to the back door. Hours will be 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Bring a sack lunch.

For more information give call Sanford at 217-9491.

Still waiting

The organization’s top show band, Evolution, made its sixth trip to California’s Sacramento Jazz Festival recently. Members still don’t know how they fared competitively.

“We are still awaiting evaluations and ranking for the competition,” Sanford said.

Approximately 20 youth band performed at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. Musicians are judged on performance, musicality, audience applause and more.

While in the the big city, the band stopped at the inner-city Jedediah Smith Elementary School, giving two performances. The Oregon Foundation and Bandon Dunes Golf Course provided the funds for travel, rooms and food.

The Lab Band  is looking to fill its ranks with beginning students. No advanced musical experience is necessary and the public is invited to listen to the bands practice.
