Medics took four people to the hospital this morning after a Myrtle Point apartment building caught fire around midnight.

Myrtle Point firefighters and police, Coquille firefighters and Coos County deputies went to the two-story building at 426 Fourth St., where firefighters found flames consuming the structure, according to Willy Burris, the fire department’s spokesman.

Two men got out on their own, while police helped another man and woman escape. Firefighters rescued a man and woman from rooms on the upper floor.

“They were inside screaming,” Burris said. “We were able to get in there and get them out.”

The four people rescued went to Coquille Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Burris said. He didn’t have the names of the victims at press time.

Burris said the fire started on the outside of the building. A state fire marshal is helping local firefighters in their investigation.

Four of the five apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. The owner is Vince Colangelo, who lives in California, Burris said. One of the apartments was completely damaged, while the others suffered moderate smoke damage. The Red Cross is assisting two of the victims, while the rest are getting help from family members. All of the residents of the building will be displaced, Burris said.

All Hail to the brave men and women of the local fire departments...and police departments as well. Thank goodness for SOCIALISM, as, if these things were ran by FOR PROFIT companies, those fortunate people who survived the fire due to the heroics of the fire department would suffer as much as those who suffer without health insurance.
