BLM offers New River hikes

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is sponsoring free activities for visitors of all ages who stop by the New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern.
The recreation area that features hiking trails is 8.6 miles south of Bandon, west of U.S. Highway 101 on Croft Lake Lane.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, with “A Local Looks Back.” This presentation and guided hike will bring history to life as participants discover evidence of people living in the area long ago.
Additional events planned at New River ACEC include:
• Cryptograms: Lichen, Mosses and Liverworts of New River — 10 a.m., Saturday, July 18. Participants will join BLM botanists for a tour of coastal meadows and learn how to identify the lichen, moss, and liverworts of New River.
• Family Field Day — 10 a.m., Saturday, July 25. A family friendly, hands on exploration of New River with a guided walk and craft activity.
• Guided Nature Walk — 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 8. A 3-mile round trip hike on the Lost Lake Trail will explore invasive species and restoration of unique plants in the area.
• Birding the Banks — 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 15. A presentation by the Cape Arago Audubon Society chapter on local birds and a walk along the banks of New River.
• Fixing and Preserving Habitats — 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22. A presentation and hike to learn about efforts to restore coastal meadows and native dune grass habitats at New River.
• The 23rd-annual Oregon Shorebird Festival Plus — 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 29 and 30. Birders of all skill levels are invited to join in a variety of field trips and presentations.
The BLM asks visitors to RSVP for the events they wish to attend due to limited space. To RSVP, contact the BLM at 756-0100 with the name of the event, name and the number in your party. For more information on the events, call 751-4464.
