COOS BAY — Hours before fireworks exploded above the Coos Bay Boardwalk, sign-toting protesters launched a verbal volley against the country’s leaders.

Speakers criticized President Barack Obama for continuing the practice of deficit spending while proposing new initiatives such as health care reform.

Men and women stood along the U.S. Highway 101, bursting into cheers when passing cars honked. Others sat and listened to a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Organizers said they collected more than 100 signatures from participants at the Coos Bay “Tea Party.” They said gatherings in Bandon and Port Orford attracted crowds of 75 and 50.

Robert Taylor of Bandon said he planned to send the signatures to state and federal lawmakers to let them know what their constituents think.

Judging from the signs, the protesters had a variety of reasons for attending.

One woman carried a sign declaring her support for Israel. Several others decried the federal bailouts, and Obama attracted the wrath of many.

Mike Esses, a Reedsport retiree, said he put aside his normal July 4 fishing and barbecuing to take up a post along 101. His sign read “Obama: Marxist/Racist/Liar/Traitor,” though he explained that his concerns went beyond the leadership of the 44th president.

“My problem is with anyone who wants to expand government,” he said.

Carda Morrison was more specific. A former Canadian living in Hillsboro, Morrison recently obtained her American citizenship and is dismayed by talk of universal health care. She recalled how some of her relatives died waiting for cancer surgery.

“It stinks. It’s the worst thing ever,” she said. “You get really terrible health care and really high taxes.”

Joining Morrison at the protest were her four children. She said it was important for them to see free speech in action.

“I want my kids to have that passion and patriotism that I feel as well,” she said.

Bill Tomlinson, a disabled postal worker from Coos Bay, brought his daughter, too. He kicked off the event by reading the Declaration of Independence, interspersing it with comments about current events.

“They continue to take your goods, your labor and your money and give it to those who refuse to work,” he said.

Several of the people who attended Saturday’s protest had also attended similar demonstrations April 15. Monty Stewart, an organizer from Reedsport, said he thought the events were making an impact by getting people to think. He noted that the American Revolution started from humble beginnings.

“You can do a lot with a small band of people,” he said.

Standupgal and 1313,

True, President Obama is literate, which one should expect from the leader of out country. But we all can't be professors and lawyers, can we? No, some of us have to be former alcoholics, who own sports teams and can't pronounce the word 'nuclear.'

To standupgal, you are the first person who said something nobody else has mentioned that I have seen anyway, and that is "OBAMA CAN READ WELL" , BOY is that the truth, he can read a speech that someone else wrote, well. I think it is so funny that everyone says what a great orator he is and all he is doing is reading from a telepromter something that someone else wrote and he gets the credit.

This is your republicans at work:
"Think Progress previously reported the outright lie being told by Republicans that the green economy legislation before Congress would 'cost every American family up to $3,100 per year in higher energy prices.' GOP leaders apparently arrived at this number by intentionally misinterpreting a 2007 study conducted by MIT.

PolitiFact interviewed John Reilly, an MIT professor and one of the authors of the study, who explained he had spoken with a representative from the House Republicans on March 20, and that he had clearly told them, 'why the estimate they had was probably incorrect and what they should do to correct it.' Nonetheless, Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) decided to use the $3,100 figure to attack cap-and-trade, while the National Republican Campaign Committee blasted dozens of press releases.

As for all of you nay sayers, you've had your chances with your protests of war and Bush. Say what you like and watch whatever channel news you wish, this is still a FREE and INDEPENDENT country, for now.....

I would like a Barrack Obama supporter to make an intelligent argument that the current administration is not marxist or facist in nature. A mixture of business and government is clearly the direction this country is going: banks, energy, health care, auto... Years ago, the government mixed with amtrak for a temporary "bailout". That has been over 20 years on that "temporary" bailout.

standupgal wrote on Jul 11, 2009 9:07 AM:

I cannot believe the stupidity of some of you. Obama is making Bush look like a piker as regards spending. He has quadrupled (that means 4 times larger) the deficit over Bush's last budget deficit. His stimulus plan is a bust unless you call habitat for a mouse in San Francisco a job creater. And now he wants cap and trade which will kill jobs in this country since all manufacturing is carbon based. And then a health care plan????? Gee, medicare is such a success!!!! As far as Fox news, they lay out the facts and then you can decide. They are not kissing up to Obama like CBS, CNN, ABC, and NBC. As for speaking ability, without a teleprompter, Obama cannot put 2 words together coherently. Let's just say he can read well.

wow. I guess if you look up "passive-aggressive" in the dictionary, you'll see 1313. You know how you get the truth? You read from MANY sources. You use critical thinking while reading those sources. You don't take what your favorite political party says at its word or as the gospel truth. All they want is to keep the facade of relevance alive. You stop hysterically slamming people who don't think the way you do or agree with you wholeheartedly, stop dehumanizing the people you are told are "the enemy". Thinking for yourself doesn't mean turning on Fox News (or any other outlet) first thing in the morning and spending the day nodding along with everything they say. That is not thinking independently, that is being told what to think and accepting it. Stop allowing yourself to be manipulated for ratings. Once upon a time you used to see bumper stickers that said "Question Authority". That still holds true, but it should be expanded to "Question Everyone". Enjoy your weekend, hopefully with the "news" OFF.

So, you got me !!!

1313 I'm not the one who posts under Obama's name, but I'll tell you that every last one of the news outlets, including Fox, is studded with lies and half truths. To say any one of them is any more truthful than any other one is to be truly brainwashed. By passively absorbing what the media calls the truth you're just accepting someone else's opinion as fact. But if that keeps you from freaking out, then, by all means continue hoovering up the lies.

Listening to fox is a sure way to boil up unwarranted hatred by the wealthy right on to the anti fascist/corporate middle class. Their sole purpose is to enable the super wealthy to gain more wealth at a faster pace. To get a reaganomics person elected to office to re deregulate and allow for more pillaging of our economy. Stop popping the pills & life will become easier, as long as narcotics are flowing the WANT will always take precedence. I would consider self employment, it will give you the flexibility to work on your schedule & the pace you can tolerate. I know it isn't easy & everything is a fight, the insurance company, the Dr.'s & the smart ass critics. My point from the beginning of all this has been that many do not realize they are supporting an agenda that would end the means of their existence. The capitalist believes he should pick & choose who will receive the benefit of his assistance if at all. Case in point, the Bulldogs are receiving a 2 million donation for a jumbo tron while teachers & staff are loosing jobs. Big government may opt to save those jobs & forgo the ostentatious display of generosity.

ARRGY some would believe socialism is the same as being robbed, but I agree with your thesis about the wealthy being in control.

I would like nothing more than to take down the elitist faction.

There are no perfect worlds & not everyone wants help or wants to help themselves. Why should the burden of the unemployed be spread upon society? Why is it not the responsibility of family? That is one of the problems, there is no accountability being practiced within the family unit.

The system is broken & it will take an entire generation or more to resolve the social issues, if ever. Being an enabler helps no one.

We have yet to begin recovery, fundamental change will only commence when enough of the middle class is truly uncomfortable.

You can't have your cake & eat it too. You want to say welfare recipients DON'T want to work but SSI Disability recipients do? It is what it is, a social service program. I never said I was not sympathetic, I just don't condone the poor me state of mind.

To PIG NUTS - No hard feelings buddy. I served this country so you could make your ridiculous comments.

Every administration had it's problems. We need to stop trying to assign blame on what has happened but rather try to resolve what will happen. This country has one of the most dependent social service programs in the world, and it costs us greatly. Taxes are high and continue to rise to support an ever growing government. This Amnesty legislation will break us, as it potentially allows for over 100 million illegal immigrants to become citizens in just the next few years. On top of that, add a National Health Plan? A plan that has PROVEN not to work in other countries. Within another 5-10 years, we'll be lucky to be able to take home even 20% of our paychecks.

Arrgy wrote on Jul 7, 2009 9:06 AM:

Your philosophy would seem to be, let them die or rob you to survive. It's this lack of fore sight and inability to reason that has this once great country divided as it is. Your support for a party that is bent on destroying the middle class is insane at least.
