COOS BAY — Friday was no holiday for bank employees in downtown Coos Bay. One bank robber noticed.
At about 9:35 a.m., a Wells Fargo bank teller called Coos Bay police to report the bank had been robbed and the culprit got away with an undisclosed amount of money, said Sgt. Chris Chapanar.
“He indicated that he was armed, however no weapon was brandished,” he said.
The teller provided a brief description of a 6-foot to 6-foot 2-inch-tall man. He was of medium build, 180 to 200 pounds, with a dark complexion or suntan. He also had short hair or was bald, with facial hair and a tattoo on the back of his neck. Police estimated he is in his 30s or 40s.
Chapanar said the man walked out of the bank’s Commercial Avenue exit, heading west on foot toward Fourth Street. He added that while there were cameras recording the robbery, police are not releasing the footage.
Coos Bay and North Bend officers arrived in the area within minutes and began searching, including Chapanar and his police dog.
Hours after the robbery, police cars could be seen throughout downtown Coos Bay.
Police are investigating leads.
The robbery doesn’t appear to be connected to any other cases, police said.
According to World archives, the bank was robbed twice in May and December in 2004.
The suspect is considered to be armed and dangerous, police said, and anyone with information is urged to contact Chapanar or Detective Scott Rogers at 269-8911.
