Community Sports, Fast Breaks for July 4: Engelmann takes title in Siuslaw River Triathlon

Mike Engelmann of Eugene won the second-annual Siuslaw River Triathlon last weekend at Mapleton.
Engelmann completed the 600-yard swim, 13.4-mile bike and 5-kilometer run in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 11 seconds.
He was more than three minutes faster than runner-up Bruce Watanabe of Florence, who finished in 1:12:32.
Watanabe posted the fastest time in the swim, completing that portion of the race in the Mapleton pool in 7:58.
Engelmann had the fastest time in the biking portion of the race, 33:47. Duncan Law of Reedsport was fastest among triathletes in the run, finishing in 23:59.
The runner for Team Skysdock, the relay team champion, finished in 22:24.
Law finished fifth overall in 1:15:43, and was one of several South Coast residents to win his age group.
Hayley Espelund of Gearhart was the top female, finishing in 1:16:18. Sara Nelson of North Bend was next in 1:17:51.
Caitlyn Reilley, like Law a student at Reedsport, was the only female under 20 and finished seventh among women in 1:30:13.
The oldest participant was 75-year-old Peg Peters of Florence, who finished in 3:02:13.

Kentuck Run
The annual Kentuck Run will take place on Saturday, July 11, at 8:30 a.m. on Kentuck Way Lane east of North Bend.
Events include a 15-kilometer run/walk, a 5-kilometer run/walk and a 1-mile kids run. The 15-kilometer walk starts at 8 a.m.
Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:15 at the start area, located approximately 3 miles east of the intersection of Kentuck Way Lane and East Bay Road.
The event is sponsored by the South Coast Running Club and Soroptomist International of the Coos Bay Area and serves as a fundraiser for CHOHPS program, which teaches and provides supplies for dental hygiene in local schools.

Hole-in-one
Richard Rogers recorded a hole-in-one during the weekly Brian Dodge Scramble at Kentuck Golf Course.
Playing from the front tees, Rogers aced the 210-yard 14th hole, a par-4 fronted by a creek. Rogers used a 5-iron for his second ace in six years of golfing.
Gold Coast swimmers
Cassie Dallas and Grace Knutsen both won multiple events for the Gold Coast Swim Team at the recent Mike Morris Memorial Invitational in Eugene.
The Coos Bay club sent 17 swimmers to the event. Results are included in today’s Community Scoreboard.
Cedar Bend Chapman
Forest Hills Country Club members Alison Myers and Terry Lavigne combined to win the annual Cedar Bend Ladies Club Chapman on Wednesday.
Myers and Lavigne combined to shoot a 75, which was five shots better than Darlene Sinclair and Marion Johnson of Coquille Valley Elks Lodge.
Cedar Bend General Manager Kathy Boice teamed with club member Lelsie Jacobson to take low-net honors with a 57.5. Cedar Bend members Judy Hulburt and Marlene Guthrie were next with a 59.
CB Speedway results
Tom Elam won the main event in two different divisions during oval track racing at Coos Bay Speedway last weekend.
Elam won the main event in both street stock and sportsman/late model.
Tom Siewell won the main event in 4-cylinder.
