Reedsport’s Monica Vaughn came up just short in her bid to win her division of the Oregon Junior Amateur on Friday.

GiGi Stoll of Portland came from behind to beat Vaughn in the championship match of the intermediate girls division, sinking a long putt from the fringe on the 17th hole for a 2 and 1 victory.

Vaughn, who is 14, led the 12-year-old Stoll 2-up after a birdie on the 10th hole, but gave back one hole with a bogey on No. 11. Stoll chipped in for birdie from just off the green on the par-5 12th to even the match, and took the lead when Vaughn bogeyed No. 15.

Both players were 4-over for the match.

Vaughn would have completed a big week with a victory.

During the tournament at Oswego Lakes, she took medalist honors for the age group when she beat Stoll on the second playoff hole after both players shot scores of 80 during their qualifying round Tuesday.

Vaughn then won her quarterfinal match 8 and 6 over Kylie Collom of Klamath Falls, and beat Connie Zhou of Lake Oswego 2-up in the semifinals.

Prior to the tournament, the Reedsport player qualified for an international tournament in Florida sponsored by the Optimist Organization.

The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships will be held July 23-28, and include players from more than 30 countries.

Amazingly, Vaughn missed two months after having surgery and shot a 1-under par round at Forest Hills Country Club on just her second day back to playing full golf — she only had been able to pitch and putt the previous few weeks.
