The Fourth of July has always meant family for Coos Bay Mayor Jeff McKeown. When he was growing up, his family would gather for picnics. This year, he’ll race in the four-kilometer Mayor’s Firecracker Run in Mingus Park with his wife and son.

As mayor, McKeown will signal the race’s start by setting off a firecracker. He’s not worried the extra chore will hurt his chances.

“I’m so slow as a runner now, if I get a late start, so much the better,” he said.

Events such as the run and evening fireworks highlight the area’s strong sense of community.

“All the events that the volunteer firefighters put on in the park, they are all the fun things about living in a small town,” he said.

The holiday has taken on greater meaning for McKeown since the 2001 terrorist attacks. His church has developed a tradition of reading the names of men and women who have died the previous week in the service of their country. Last Sunday, church officials read 10 names.

“There are individuals out there that are truly making unbelievable sacrifices for our country,” McKeown said. “It just puts in perspective how important what we have in our country is.”
