Sports Briefs: Kim breaks course record in opening round at Congressional

BETHESDA, Md. — Anthony Kim ran off eight birdies over his final 13 holes and set the course record at Congressional with an 8-under 62, giving him a two-shot lead over tournament host Tiger Woods, Bryce Molder and D.A. Points.
The 24-year-old Kim has not won since his victory in the AT&T National last year, slowed by an assortment of injuries that caused his game to slip just as he was being anointed the next great American player. It was the best round of his PGA Tour career.
Woods played in the afternoon with deceptive wind swirling from trees lining the fairways. He missed only two fairways and three greens, and made enough putts for a 64, his lowest round since the 2007 Tour Championship.
U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover had a 69.
Three share LPGA lead
SYLVANIA, Ohio — Morgan Pressel, Song-Hee Kim and Laura Diaz shot 7-under 64s to share the first-round lead in the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, a stroke ahead of Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen at Highland Meadows.
Pettersen aced the 154-yard third hole with a 7-iron.
Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park, Jiyai Shin, Lindsey Wright, Jee Young Lee and Minea Blomqvist had 66s, and top-ranked Lorena Ochoa was in a group at 67. Defending champion Paula Creamer withdrew because of a thumb injury moments before her morning tee time.

Linebacker suspended
NEW YORK — The NFL suspended Jets linebacker Calvin Pace for four games without pay for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Pace will miss New York’s first four games of the season and be eligible to return for the Monday night game at Miami on Oct. 12.
In a statement issued by the Jets, Pace said the ban is a result of him taking an over-the-counter dietary supplement that he was unaware violated the NFL’s policy.
Pace, in his second season with the Jets, is eligible to participate in preseason practices and games. The suspension begins Sept. 5 and he can return to practice on Oct. 5, a day after New York’s game at New Orleans.

Lakers pick up Artest
HOUSTON — Ron Artest is joining Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.
“I am very excited to finally be going to L.A.,” Artest said in a statement issued by his agent Thursday night. “For years now, the Lakers have expressed interest in having me play for them, but we could never get the stars to align. I’m finally a Laker and I can’t wait to get on the court with Kobe, Pau (Gasol) and the rest of the team, and play for Phil (Jackson). The Lakers really made me feel wanted.”
Ariza to join Rockets
HOUSTON — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the Houston Rockets have reached a multiyear deal with free agent Trevor Ariza.
The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because NBA rules prohibit announcing free-agent deals until next week, said the Rockets offered Ariza the full mid-level exception for the first year, about $5.6 million.
The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season.
Taurasi cited on DUI charge
PHOENIX — Phoenix police said leading Phoenix Mercury scorer Diana Taurasi was cited for drunken driving just a few hours after the club’s win over the Seattle Storm.
Phoenix police spokesman Luis Samudio said an officer stopped Taurasi at about 2:30 Thursday morning for allegedly speeding. A police statement said the officer smelled alcohol and gave her several field sobriety tests.
Taurasi was then driven to a mobile DUI van where she gave a blood sample, then was cited and released. Authorities did not know her blood alcohol content.
Taurasi, a guard, scored 22 points and blocked four shots in Wednesday night’s 93-81 win over the Storm. She is the WNBA’s leading fan vote-getter ahead of the league’s July 25 All-Star game.
Blazers pick summer roster
PORTLAND — Second-year guard Jerryd Bayless and three draft picks highlight the Portland Trail Blazers summer league roster that begins play July 13 in Las Vegas.
Bayless was the summer league MVP last year after averaging 29.8 points. He went on to average 4.3 points during the regular season. Joining him on the summer team are draft choices Jeff Pendergraph, Dante Cunningham and Patrick Mills. All were second-round picks last month.
The squad also features two players with strong Portland ties — former Jefferson High standout Thomas Gardner and former University of Portland guard Pooh Jeter.

Cameron Dollar hires his dad
SEATTLE — Cameron Dollar has hired his father to be one of his assistant coaches on the Seattle University men’s basketball team.
The university announced Thursday that Donald Dollar will leave Georgia after 46 seasons of coaching, mainly at the high-school level, to join the Redhawks for his son’s first season as a Division I head coach.
Donald Dollar’s teams have won more than 660 games, among the most in Georgia boys high school basketball.
He has won three state championships and has 11 appearances in the state semifinals. The majority of his success came in 22 seasons at Douglass High School. He’s been at the University of West Georgia for the last two seasons.
The younger Dollar, a top assistant at the University of Washington the past few seasons, says he is fortunate to have a father so accomplished as a coach.

Strasburg named top player
LUBBOCK, Texas — Former San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Washington Nationals last month, has been selected as the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s player of the year.
Strasburg went 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA and led the nation with 195 strikeouts while leading Tony Gwynn’s Aztecs to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991.
Leyritz arrested on domestic battery charge
DAVIE, Fla. — Former major leaguer Jim Leyritz was arrested Thursday in South Florida on charges of domestic battery against his ex-wife, just two months before his trial on a DUI manslaughter charge was set to begin.
Leyritz, 45, was arrested at his home in Davie, a Fort Lauderdale suburb, a police report said. Leyritz had been free on bail on the manslaughter charge but a judge ruled this arrest violated the conditions of his release and ordered him to remain jailed.

Boonen can race in Tour
MONACO — Sprint star Tom Boonen of Belgium has been cleared to compete in the Tour de France after winning his appeal of a ban for testing positive for cocaine.
The French Olympic committee’s arbitration panel handed down the decision today, a day before the Tour is set to start in Monaco.
“The ruling is: ‘We win’. Tom Boonen will ride in the Tour,” Boonen lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont said by phone.
Boonen’s Quick Step team welcomed the ruling, but regretted that a decision took so long.
“I’m relieved but I’m sorry that we had to go up to here,” team manager Patrick Lefevere told The Associated Press. “The pressure has been huge, not only on Tom Boonen’s shoulders, but on the whole team.”
In 2007, Boonen won the green jersey awarded to the Tour’s best sprinter.
He has already proved his form this season by winning Paris-Roubaix for a third time.
