Reedsport’s Monica Vaughn is in the championship match for her age group  in the Oregon Junior Amateur at Lake Oswego today.

Vaughn, 14, took medalist honors for the intermediate girls division in the 79th Oregon Junior Amateur at Oswego Lakes on Tuesday and won matches Wednesday and Thursday to reach the final.

Her semifinal match Thursday was a 2-up win over Connie Zhou of Lake Oswego. Vaughn crushed Kylie Collom of Klamath Falls 8 and 6 in the quarterfinals.

In the final, she faces 12-year-old GiGi Stoll of Portland, another veteran of the junior circuit, but a first-year player in the intermediate division, which is for girls ages 12 to 14. Stoll has not been stretched past the 14th hole in either of her two matches during the tournament.

Vaughn and Stoll both shot scores of 80, 7-over par, in the qualifying round on Tuesday. Vaughn won medalist honors on the second playoff hole, making this the third time in the last four years she’s been medalist for her division at the tournament.

Last year, Vaughn was medalist for the same division in the OregonJunior Amateur at Bandon Dunes, but lost her first match. She went on to win the flight at the tournament.

The only other South Coast resident in the tournament this year, 12-year-old Braden Fugate of Bandon, qualified 31st in the intermediate boys division, but then lost two matches to be eliminated.
