NORTH BEND — Sawyer Wilson was admittedly a little nervous when he entered the game in the seventh inning Wednesday night with North Coos clinging to a one-run lead over Roseburg Horizon.
Wilson was one of two pitchers the Horizon lineup battered for 18 hits in a 13-7 win in the opener.
Then Roseburg’s first batter in the inning, Nic Syrie, hit a hard grounder right back at Wilson. The ball took a wicked hop and caromed off Wilson’s knee and toward right field.
North Coos first baseman Jordan Moeller collected the ball and Wilson got over to first base to take the throw before Syrie could get there, getting the critical first out in the inning.
“It was an adrenaline rush,” Wilson said of his quick reaction and covering the bag.
After he took a couple throws to the plate to make sure he could pitch with his knee hurting, Wilson hit Roseburg’s Zach Bennett, but then got Ricky Cortes to fly to right field and struck out Jacob Lum to end the game, preserving an 8-7 win for North Coos.
Wilson said he tried to stay positive as he went to the mound.
“I know I can throw and get the save,” he recalled of his thought process before the inning. “I can shut these guys down.”
The win in the nightcap improved North Coos to 6-4 in league play, counting a pair of forfeits by South Eugene, which canceled a trip to Clyde Allen Field for a doubleheader on Sunday.
After the loss in the opener, getting a victory in the second game was vital, said Dalton Iveans, who had three hits and one big play in the field during the nightcap.
“It’s very important,” he said. “Each time, we need to come out with at least one win.”
North Coos jumped on Roseburg pitcher Kyle Jaukkuri in the first inning to score four runs, and then held on for the win.
Ryan Campbell started the inning with a sharp single to left, and Elliott Aurdahl put down a sacrifice bunt. Aurdahl was safe at first when the throw was off the mark. Iveans followed with an RBI single to center, and Nic Canaday added an infield single to load the bases. Michael Bennett brought in pinch runner Ryan Love with a one-out single and then Jordan Moeller scored both Iveans and Canaday with a two-out single.
The Waterfront extended the lead to 7-1 in the second inning. Iveans singled, Canaday hit an RBI double to center and Wilson had an RBI single. Wilson scored when Bennett lined a single and the ball was misplayed in the outfield on the hop for an error.
Roseburg got back in the game in the third, when Aurdahl, the Waterfront’s starting pitcher, ran into control problems. He walked three straight batters, one coming in on a wild pitch, and Jared Laverne pounded a two-run triple to center, Roseburg’s first hit of the game. Laverne later scored on a wild pitch, pulling Roseburg within 7-5.
Campbell came on in relief of Aurdahl and kept the Horizon off the scoreboard for the next two innings.
North Coos, meanwhile, added an insurance run in the fourth when Heston Altenbach reached on a two-out error and then scored on another error.
That run proved critical.
Roseburg threatened in the fifth, when Zach Bennett led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and advanced to third on a passed ball. Jacob Lum then hit a high fly to right field, but Iveans caught the ball and threw Bennett out at the plate when he tried to score, ending the inning.
The Horizon scored twice in the sixth, with help from the waterfront. Gabe Forrester led off with a bunt single, and then Trinity Castner put down a sacrifice bunt and beat the throw to first for another single.
The two runners then scored on consecutive throwing errors by North Coos.
But Wilson shut the door in the seventh.
“Campbell and Sawyer did a good job in relief,” North Coos coach Brad Horning said.
After the offensive outburst in the first game, Roseburg had just five hits in the nightcap. North Coos, meanwhile, pounded out 12 hits, including three by Iveans and two each by Campbell, Canaday and Michael Bennett.
“We obviously swung the bat real well in the second game,” Horning said.
To his credit, Jaukkuri allowed just the one unearned run after the second inning, and also struck out 12 hitters.
In the opener, Canaday had a three-run home run in the first inning for North Coos and Wilson added a solo shot in the third. Wilson also had a pair of singles, while Canaday, Altenbach, Aurdahl and Moeller had two hits each.
But Roseburg rallied to take the lead with four runs in the fifth and added three insurance runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Zach Bennett finished 4-for-5, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Castner, Jaukkuri and Syrie added three hits each for Roseburg, which is 5-7 in league.
Because a nonleague doubleheader with Grants Pass was canceled today, North Coos is off until Sunday, when the Waterfront hosts North Eugene in a league twin bill. The first pitch for the opener has been moved up an hour to 4 p.m.
Iveans likes the direction the team is headed.
“We’re really coming together,” he said.
“We’re improving every game,” added Wilson.
