Golf Briefs: Cedar Bend Challenge Cup includes double eagle

Dane Ross and Tyler Ward punctuated their victory in the Cedar Bend Challenge Cup with a double eagle during the second day of the recent tournament.

Ward and Ross had their double eagle on the 442-yard par 5 fifth hole during the second day of the tournament, which was played in a chapman format.

They shot 67 both during the chapman portion of the tournament and the scramble a day earlier for a two-day total of 134. That was three shots better than Steve Poponi and Dennis Cook, who shot a 60 in the scramble portion of the event.

Zan Bates and Hugh Kyler combined for low net honors both days, finishing with a total of 108, six strokes better than Ed McQuade and Gene Knoph.

Judy Hulburt and Marlene Guthrie won the women’s division, with a net total of 118, five shots better than Di Gollaher and Sharon Guinn.

Forest Hills Ladies Invitational

Terry Lavigne, Jan Shaw, Joyce Booren and Janice Housley combined to win the Ladies Invitational at Forest Hills Country Club on Tuesday.

The tournament drew more than 50 players, including golfers from Salishan Lodge, Crestview Hills (Waldport), Ocean Dunes (Florence), Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, Bandon Crossing, Cedar Bend, Salmon Run (Brookings) and Stewart Park (Roseburg).

The winning foursome had a score of 72 for the round, which was three shots better than the team of Alison Myers, Nadine Shute, Martha Vilelle and Molly Coonse. Another shot back was the group of Marion Johnson, Linda Reid, Judy Miles and Betty Saul.

Pat Curry, Linda Mix, Bonita Morgan and Ardess Christensen took low-net honors with a 42, two shots better than a pair of teams.

After the scramble tournament, the women enjoyed a buffet lunch provided by McKenzie on the Green.

Casual Fridays

Julie Hawthorne maintains a nine-point lead over Lisa Hawthorne through last Friday’s event in Crossings Cup race in the Bandon Crossings Casual Fridays competition.

Different events are held each week on Fridays, starting at 2 p.m., with the fee the regular twilight rate of $45, which includes money for prizes. The prizes go toward merchandise from the pro shop, range balls or food and beverage items.

Last week’s winner was Don Williams, who scored plus 6 during the day’s event, which was a quota tournament.

Youth golf clinic

The annual Southwestern Oregon Youth Golf Clinic, sponsored by the Coquille Indian Tribe, is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Practice Center.

The free clinic is for golfers ages 7 to 18. Students 14 to 18 who participate in the clinic also might be chosen for a three-day golf camp, Aug. 9-11, at Watson Ranch Golf. To be picked for the camp, golfers must participate in the clinic.

The clinic for students ages 12 to 18 will run from 1 to 4:45 p.m. on July 16, with registration set to begin at 12:30. At 3 p.m., participants will play the par-3 course at the practice center.

The clinic for students ages 7 to 11 will begin at 2:45 p.m., with registration at 2:30.

To help pay for the golf camp, an adult fundraiser tournament will be held on July 18 at Watson Ranch Golf. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Up to 25 teams can participate in the four-man scramble tournament. The fee is $125 for individuals or $475 for players signing up as a team.
