Search and rescue team looks for missing man

Thursday, July 02, 2009 |
A Coos County sheriff's search and rescue team is searching for a man who took a walk last night in the Blue Ridge area and didn't return.
Sgt. Pat Downing said Richard Smith, 48, was with a few other people at Blue Ridge southeast of Coos Bay when he said he wanted to go for a walk at about 7:50 p.m. He left the Toyota 4Runner the group was in and never returned. Smith's companions called police and rescuers started a search last night, calling in a police dog from Coos Bay.
Downing said the search was cut off at about 11:30 p.m., but resumed early this morning. Smith may be suffering from a heart or other medical condition and was reportedly acting paranoid before he left, police said. The Sheriff's Office did not have a city of residence or description of Smith available at press time.
