North Coos takes two at Umpqua
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 11:50 AM PDT

The North Coos Waterfront swept a doubleheader from American Legion newcomer Umpqua Blaze on Friday at Myrtle Creek.

A twin bill Sunday against South Eugene was postponed, with no makeup date determined.

The Waterfront improved to 3-3 in league play with the wins, heading into a doubleheader at home Wednesday against Roseburg Horizon. North Coos has a nonleague doubleheader at home Friday against the Grants Pass Diggers and hosts a twin bill against North Eugene on Sunday.

Three teams from the Area 4 NorthDivision will qualify for the Legion A State Tournament.  North Coos has played fewer games than all the other teams, with 10 doubleheaders — eight in league play — in the first 20 days of July.

Sheldon is 11-3 in league play, while Roseburg Pepsi is 8-2 and North Eugene is 10-3. Roseburg Horizon is 3-6, South Eugene 3-10 and Umpqua 3-13.

Umpqua is a new team in Zone 4, made up of players from the South Umpqua High School area who used to be part of either Roseburg Pepsi or Roseburg Horizon.

The Waterfront won Friday’s opener 8-1, behind a dominant pitching performance from Michael Bennett.

The Bandon High School standout allowed eight hits, but didn’t give up any runs until Josh Kennedy had a leadoff double in the fifth and later scored on a grounder by Ky Schoonhoven.

Bennett struck out three and walked one.

North Coos, meanwhile, scored two runs in the first, when Dalton Iveans singled, Nic Canaday walked and Sawyer Wilson brought both runners in with a single to right.

The Waterfront led 2-1 heading into the sixth, but scored three runs in each of the final two innings.

Jimmy Mack walked and moved to second on a sacrifice by Elliott Aurdahl to start the inning. Iveans walked and Canaday hit a two-run single. Canaday then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilson.

In the seventh, Heston Altenbach had a one-out double and scored on a single by Connor Jackson. Aurdahl singled with two outs, Iveans hit an RBI single and Wilson had a bases-loaded walk for his fourth RBI of the game.

Iveans had three hits in the game and Canaday and Altenbach had two each.

In the nightcap, North Coos had a 3-0 lead before Umpqua scored six runs in the sixth inning.

The Waterfront rallied for the win with five runs in the seventh. Jordan Moeller singled to lead off the inning and David Midcap walked. Mack and Aurdahl followed with RBI singles to tie the game.

After Iveans struck out for the first out, Canaday walked and Wilson put North Coos in front with a sacrifice fly. Bennett added a two-run single.

North Coos had scored two runs in the first inning, when Mack singled, Iveans had an RBI double and Canaday hit a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Wilson and Altenbach had singles and Midcap had an RBI grounder.

Wilson pitched the first five innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven. The Blaze had just two hits, but took advantage of three walks and two hit batters, in the sixth off Jackson. Dustin Maurer had a three-run double.
