Small fires busy Coos Bay firefighters

Monday, June 29, 2009 |
Coos Bay firefighters were called out to three separate fires that didn't amount to much.
The first, on Friday at about 10:44 p.m., began with a report of someone throwing gas around and grass catching on fire at 93455 Paradise Lane.
Battalion Chief Mark Anderson explained that someone had been burning driftwood at the home's backyard and threw gas on the pile to get it going. He explained that despite the report, it didn't actually get out of hand.
At about 1:14 p.m. Saturday, the department received another report of a small bark mulch fire outside of the Hales Performing Arts Center at Southwestern Oregon Community College.
The report came from college security officers who found the 3-inch to 4-inch blaze. The fire department responded with one engine and two firefighters who put out the petite blaze with a hand-held water extinguisher. The fire caused no damage, and Anderson believes it may have been started by a cigarette.
Finally, early this morning, firefighters went to an apartment at 2650 Koosbay Blvd. after neighbors said it was filled with smoke and that its occupant wasn't responding.
At about 12:36 a.m., the department sent one engine and two firefighters to the home. Firefighters soon learned 32-year-old Georgina Miller had been baking a frozen pizza in her oven but had fallen asleep and it burned. Neighbors heard the alarm. Anderson said Miller refused medical attention, and his staff members checked the stove and surrounding walls for heat before leaving.
