Cancer survivors and those battling the disease led the Survivors Lap at the start of the Relay for Life of North Bend/Coos Bay on Saturday afternoon. At the center of the charge was 2009 grand marshal Gordon Everett, a North Bend man who was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer earlier this year.

Organizers had set a goal for this year's relay of $100,000. Volunteers had counted $89,000 as of this morning, reported relay committee co-chair Connie Bradley.

More than half of the money raised will help fund cancer detection, treatment and education services through the American Cancer Society.
