GRANTS PASS (AP) - The Portland-based Hemp and Cannabis Foundation has opened a permanent clinic in Grants Pass for people seeking medical marijuana cards.

Regional director Henrik Rode said the clinic, the first permanent one in Oregon outside Portland, will help patients who qualify to get permits to grow and use marijuana for their symptoms.

Josephine County District Attorney Stephen Campbell said he hadn't been aware of the new clinic but that he had seen statistics showing the county to have among the highest number of medical marijuana cards in Oregon.

Rode said the group hopes to open permanent offices in Bend and Eugene.

The hipocracy is mind-numbing. Alcohol and Cigs- legal. Could you not make an arguement that those are more of a gateway drug than pot.

I cannot remember the last story i read of a stoner killing a family with his car after having too many joints. I can, regrettably, cite numerous stories of drunks killing people leaving the bar. Nightly. Not to mention all the benefits the plant itself give us. To all you close-minded readers, you gave us Obama. He can't even produce a birth certificate.

Eastsider wrote on Jul 5, 2009 8:28 AM:

Two of the better reasons to legalize pot is that, right now, anyone who wants pot already has some, and; drug dealers don't check ID's and are happy to sell to minors.

007,

Its interesting you'd want the "potheads" to leave, but not a mention of all the meth heads around here?

The way things are being run in Coos County I would prefer the "Pot Heads" take over!!

I volunteer as security for an event and I just want to state that I would MUCH rather deal with a "stoned" person or a drunk person.
Every drug affects a person differently. I have taken 1/2 of a prescribed dose of Tyenol 3 and been asleep in half hour whereas my husband has taken 2 and buzzes around the house wired...The key idea for this clinic is to help those that need help with the paperwork...It doesn't state in the article that the Foundation is going to hand out Marijuana.

To Just A Guy: During all this research that you did, have you ever ran across what GOOD pot does for people with PTSD? Or do you know what that means? Post traumatic sress syndrome. My son, about 12 yrs ago was the soul survivor of a fishing boat that sank, he watched his 2 best friends slip away from him in the middle of the night. He clung to the bottom of that boat for 6 hrs till he was rescued from the cold water! He relives that moment every single day of his life, can't sleep at night! The only way he can get through and live any kind of normalcy is smoking pot! He can enjoy his kids he can sleep and do his job as a fisherman again. Until you yourself are in a situation such as that or are a cancer patient or anyone else that NEEDS this, go preach from another pulpit, because these people don't want to hear from you! And for the record, no, me, myself I do not smoke pot and if I did it would not be your business!

We can only hope that the "potheads" will now leave Coos County for Josehine County (Grants Pass)...... Don't act like you don't know who you are!!!!!

NoGod wrote on Jul 1, 2009 8:19 AM:

@Justaguy
Actually if you had read the studies from Europe it states that "Patients with schizophrenia are more likely to have psychotic episodes after smoking marijuana.." It further states that "Many patients have claimed that cannabis actually helps prevent said psychotic episodes"

Liquor kills more people then any other substance, yet, there are liquor stores EVERYWHERE.

Just a Guy if you're worried that pot will make you crazy don't smoke it.

There. Problem solved.

The Brutal Truth wrote on Jul 1, 2009 7:03 AM:

JUST A GUY,

Why aren't you up in arms over the routine, everyday sale of prescription drugs? Drugs that actually ADDICTING, and can (see there's that word, "CAN") have terrible, sometimes lethal, side effects?

What about alcohol? Perfectly legal yet causes WAY more problems than weed ever will.

pril wrote on Jul 1, 2009 2:51 AM:

can can can may may may. Plenty of people dismiss a theory that says we may be related to primates but OOOOH NOOOO if it's pot, and it's anti-pot, it's got to be true.

Jethro wrote on Jun 30, 2009 11:26 PM:

However, I see nobody complaining about the dozens of pharmacies in Grant's Pass that distribute deadly and dangerous opiate-based drugs by the truckload on a daily basis, much of which is sold illegally on the streets, and which people will steal your possessions to get. These drugs destroy lives all over the place, yet no complaints because they are socially approved dope. Hypocrisy.

just a guy wrote on Jun 30, 2009 6:15 PM:

Not surprisingly the Pro-Pot folks dismiss anything that hints at dangers to Pot.
The TRUTH is - the latest research keeps looking worse for Marijuana with every study:
From the National Institute for Health:
A number of studies have shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and schizophrenia....Chronic marijuana use, especially in a very young person, may also be a marker of risk for mental illnesses, including addiction, stemming from genetic or environmental vulnerabilities, such as early exposure to stress or violence. At the present time, the strongest evidence links marijuana use and schizophrenia and/or related disorders. High doses of marijuana can produce an acute psychotic reaction, and research suggests that in vulnerable individuals, marijuana use may be a factor that increases risk for the disease.

If you're terminal, it seems to me that it wouldn't matter what removes the pain, but if you might live, it would be wise to keep all of your brain.

The Brutal Truth wrote on Jun 30, 2009 12:32 PM:

There is nothing at all wrong with medical weed.

Really, there's nothing wrong with weed, period. It's silly that it is illegal.

The "reefer madness" crowd (like JUST A GUY) has absolutely no good argument on why it is illegal. Its actually pretty funny to listen to their reasons. They can all be easily refuted.

No, I am not a "pot head" or "stoner."

Shallow Al wrote on Jun 30, 2009 11:24 AM:

Geez wrote on Jun 30, 2009 10:58 AM:

To JUST A GUY:

Well that was an interesting link, but you missed one key word in the headline of the article, and in the article itself: MAY. Marijuana MAY do this, it MAY do that. It was a short, vague article that was inconclusive on its results.

I don’t think terminal cancer and AIDS patients, or others, really care about the MAY report. They just care there is a plant out their that can help them eat after chemo and wont kill off any of their other internal organs like prescription drugs do.

Plus prescription drugs, cocaine, crack, meth, alcohol, and so on, MAY cause the same harm. Also eating foods with dyes, man made chemicals and even HF corn syrup can trigger problems.

Now if you ban sugars, (especially the synthetic ones), just think how much healthier the whole world would be!

Just Me wrote on Jun 30, 2009 10:30 AM:

To Just A Guy: So, is this based on your personal use from let's say uh, ten years ago? That info is a crock! If that were the case about a fourth of the population of the USA or more would be walking around with schizophrenia right now! I know alot of people that use it for medicinal purposes and other reasons for what I don't question, for over ten years and they are just fine, thank you very much!

bluebudda wrote on Jun 29, 2009 8:21 PM:

To just a guy... just one report by a pub-par school. there has been no reports on deaths from Marijuana or any form of illness.

just a guy wrote on Jun 27, 2009 11:00 AM:

Now that we have learned that marijuana use frequently results in schizophrenia about ten years later, it would seem that any other pain management option would be preferable.

Why would they call themselves the Hemp and cannibus Foundation? Hemp is a separate plant altogether,It has no medical uses other than making a natural fiber like cotton. It also makes for a great cover crop in times when the soil needs to be restored. The seed from the plant is used for a variety of ways for healthy eating, but as far as lumping it with Cannibus only make the uneducated public think that its a bad thing. Our government tried to radicate it from the face of the mother earth thinking that the Hippies were trying to use it to get high.
