Supporters for the American Cancer Society's battle against cancer will be found marching on the Sunset Middle School track Saturday and Sunday, during the 2009 Relay for Life of North Bend/Coos Bay.
Relay for Life programs collected $409 million nationwide in 2008, with $109,000 raised in the Bay Area and $36,000 raised by Relay for Life of South Coos County in Coquille.
Organizers set this year's Bay Area goal at $100,000, with the South Coast's strongest contributor, Sause Bros., taking a year off. More than half of the money raised will stay in Coos County, said Amber Nicholson, ACS staff partner for Coos County Relay events.
"The majority of the money stays in Coos County and goes to services for cancer patients and their families, early education and detection efforts," she said.
The remaining contributions will help pay for general management, fundraising and 11 "life-saving research" grants at Oregon State University and Oregon Health Sciences University, where researchers in the 1990s discovered Imatinib mesylate - marketed as Gleevec - a drug used to treat cancer.
"A lot of the money raised in Oregon does go to fund Nobel-Prize-winning researchers," Nicholson said.
About 800 to 1,000 people are expected to attend this year's Relay for Life of North Bend/Coos Bay, said relay committee co-chairwoman Connie Bradley. A number of events are planned for throughout the day.
Relay for Life of South Coos County will be held July 10-11 at Coquille High School.
