The Egyptian Theatre is hosting a benefit concert Saturday night to celebrate the 100th birthday of clarinet great Benny Goodman.
Coos Bay native Aaron Johnson will perform alongside the It's About Time Big Band. They'll perform arrangements includingSing," "Bugle Call Rag" and "Stomping' at the Savoy."
The performance has special meaning for Johnson, who picked up the clarinet at 10 after listening to a vinyl record of Goodman's at his grandparents place.
He later received a full scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music, in New York City.
He got copies of Goodman's original hand-written manuscripts from the Yale University music library. They have mostly collected dust in a closet, but Johnson dusted them off and worked on them to make them playable for Saturday's concert.
The live performance starts at 7 p.m. Saturday. General admission tickets cost $10, while members get a $2 discount.
Children 12 and younger can get in for $5. Proceeds go to the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association's general fund, with a major portion going toward the handicap-accessible restore project. |
