COQUILLE - A former Coquille police officer will stand trial on charges of giving alcohol to minors and propositioning an underage girl for sex.Â
James Bryant is scheduled for trial on Sept. 22, along with his wife, Tammy Bryant, who also is charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor.
Coos County Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Barron set the date Monday morning. Neither of the defendants, who now live in Sisters, appeared before the judge. Assistant Public Defender Allen Goldman appeared on their behalf.
Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said the Bryants consolidated their cases for trial.
Coos Bay police arrested James Bryant, 35, on March 18, on three counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor and attempting to contribute to the sexual delinquency of a minor. Tammy Bryant, 36, was not arrested, but she was charged during the course to the investigation.
The charges allege James Bryant gave alcohol to three people under 21 and tried to have sex with a girl younger than 18.
Eriks Gabliks, deputy director of the Oregon Department of Safety Standards and Training, said the department is looking into whether Bryant's officer certification should be revoked.
The department gave Bryant the opportunity to voluntarily surrender his certification in March after being notified of his arrest. He declined, Gabliks said.
Gabliks said the department will keep the file open until after the trial is finished and then decide whether to revoke his certification. The department has requested Coquille Police Department's file on the incident.
"Once the court makes it ruling and we receive and review the information from Coquille PD we will have a better idea on our next actions," Gabliks said in an e-mail.
