Bryce Weidman threw a shutout in Albany on Saturday as the Three Rivers Sandblasters beat the Mid-Valley Rockets 3-0 to improve to 4-1 in American Legion league play.

Weidman only got into trouble in one inning, when the Rockets got runners on first and third, but the recent North Bend graduate ended the inning with a strikeout.

He faced just four batters over the minimum, allowing three hits and striking out 12.

Three Rivers coach Ben Johnson said Weidman’s effort was “truly outstanding.”

And the Sandblasters needed the performance on the mound.

“Although the pitching was razor sharp tonight, the hitting was anything but,” he said.

Three Rivers scored twice in the second inning.

Weidman led off with a single and advanced to third when Travis Iverson put down a sacrifice bunt and the throw to first was off line.

Matt Fritz brought in Weidman with a grounder to shortstop and Iverson scored on a grounder to second by Jake Stevens.

The other run came in the sixth, when Drew Rainwater was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an errant pick-off throw, and scored on a grounder to short by Eddie Crowe.

Saturday’s win followed a victory Friday night in Springfield, when the Sandblasters topped the Titans 8-5.

Crowe had three hits and three RBIs, including an RBI double in the ninth to break a 5-5 tie. Zach Laxague followed with a two-run single for the Sandblasters, and also finished the game with three RBIs.

Fritz, Kyle Davis and Joe Crowe, the Sandblasters’ seventh, eighth, and ninth hitters, each had two hits. Rainwater scored three runs.

Trevor Roberts earned the save, striking out two batters in the ninth while setting the Rockets down in order.

Three Rivers is 6-1 overall, 4-1 in league play, heading into games at Post 9 in Salem tonight and at Richey’s Market in Corvallis on Tuesday. Three Rivers hosts Withnell Dodge on Wednesday in Florence.

North Coos splits twin bill

Michael Bennett had a huge game for North Coos in the opener of a doubleheader at South Eugene on Sunday, lifting the Waterfront to a 5-3 win. South Eugene won the nightcap 11-1 in six innings.

Bennett had two home runs and a triple and picked up the win on the mound, with four strikeouts and no walks. He allowed seven hits.

He tied the game with solo home runs in the second and fourth innings and put North Coos in front with a triple in the sixth. He added an insurance run on an RBI groundout by Jimmy Mack.

In the nightcap, South Eugene scored six runs in the first and went on to an easy win.

North Coos hosts Central Point in a nonleague doubleheader on Tuesday and returns to league play Friday with a doubleheader against the Umpqua Blaze at South Umpqua High School.

im not sure how great a player bryce weidman can be when he was at bat 6 times, and only got 1 hit... that is not very good odds there...in order to be a "good" player, your offense needs to be just as good as your defense...mabye he should take some batting lessons. i hear there is a camp coming up in portland, maybe he should attend.
