Both Coos County Deputy District Attorney Karen McClintock and Curtis H. Jack's lawyer John Trew recommended Jack serve 15 days in jail on his third-degree sex conviction.

Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Barron didn't buy it.

The judge said he wanted to hold the Coquille businessman who pleaded guilty Friday to a strict standard in sentencing. He sentenced him to 90 days in the county jail.

"The judge thought that was appropriate based on the violation of trust and that he is a leader in the community," McClintock said.

The misdemeanor charge came out of a plea bargain over a May 12 incident in which Jack touched his teenage exchange student's breast against her will, a Coos County press release said. Barron could have sent Jack to jail longer, since the charge carries a maximum sentence of a year in jail.

The Coos County District Attorney's Office dropped two other charges of first- and third degree sex abuse in the plea deal.

McClintock said she offered Jack the plea bargain with the stipulation that it was only available before the girl got on a plane to return home Friday. She said the girl was willing to return to the U.S. if the case went to trial.

"She wanted to get the matter settled so she can get on with the rest of her life," McClintock said.

The deputy DA said she had a strong case on the felony first-degree sex abuse charge, but needed to take into consideration the student's wishes and the cost to the prosecution if the girl returned for trial.

Barron also sentenced Jack, who owns Coquille Supply, to three years of supervised probation, and he will have to register as a sex offender, pay a $6,250 fine and complete a sex offender treatment program.

90 days??

I gotta lie down. The DA's Office certainly stood their ground this time.

Talk about tough law enforcement.

What crime IS serious around here?

I can't wait for the next election. Way past time for change in the DA.

Curtis Jack had a wife and two children. Does anyone stop to think of how they must be feeling? They are just as much victims as the young girl is. He not only has ruined his own life he has ruined his family's. The embarrasment they must feel is more than anyone should feel. What he did doesnt just affect him and the girl, it affects everyone around him. I feel so sorry for his family. My heart goes out to them in this horrible horrible time. I only wish that Curtis Jack would be spending more time in jail. 90 days is hardly a punishment.

I didn't say anything about this county. I love Coos Bay, and its law abiding people. Our judges are good too, not to mention our police force in both North Bend, and Coos Bay. It’s the law, it needs to be updated. I would like to know that when my 2 children walk out the door they are not going to run into a guy like this in 90 days.

Many of us are very proud of our area, just not proud of a few things that have been going on lately.

90 lousy days, Big deal, considering the lifelong trauma that this child will suffer. To me this falls way short of justice. When will our society have enough of this behavior? This guy will sit in a room, read books, talk on the phone, watch TV, and have 3 meals a day served to him. I read that someone was feeling sorry for the embarrassment of his family. WOW. I would love to see offences towards children carry a minimum of 10+ years. THEN maybe they would think about it first.

Is the Coos County Deputy District Attorney an elected position or are the appointed by the Gov. does anybody know?

rambo wrote on Jun 23, 2009 7:47 PM:

Hey webby, you might want to pull that last comment. The one by coquiller. There is only one garbage man in this town. And I have heard lots of stories about him through the years. Just a heads up. lol.

Coquiller wrote on Jun 23, 2009 5:40 AM:

Whether or not you think 90 days is good or bad, he's in jail and I can't imagine how humilitated he is and should be! I feel for his children and wife and let this be a lesson for the other men out there that continue to be Aggressive and don't get in trouble....I'm sure Curtis never thought this would happen, not in his wildest dreams! Be careful taking your garbage out!!!

To Chilly -

The statute on sex crimes is usually 7 years. Although... if quite a long time has passed, the case will be harder to prove without physical evidence. However, doctor visits and psychological records can be used in a variety of ways...

Good luck to you. My heart goes out to this young victim. This man is a shameful excuse for a human being - positioning himself in the affluent society available in Coos County - only to be just another pedophile. Curtis Jack, you should be ashamed of yourself.

kikilongbean wrote on Jun 21, 2009 2:36 PM:

I find this hard to believe. 90 days? Is that all?

And I suppose he'll still be on those Coquillian committees as well.

Amazing. You should be real proud of yourselves.

coosbaygirl wrote on Jun 21, 2009 2:34 PM:

I have to say I am pleased that he plead guilty. Now I can stop listening to all the people who kept saying it was her fault. I understand there are situations where false accusations are made, but victims should be allowed to come forward without people accusing her of deserving it, instigating it (by the way she dresses), or having a daddy complex. No matter what the victim should always be treated as such in these situations, I don't care how respected the other person is in the community. It only victimizes the person over again. Unfortunately,(in my opinion) he only got 90 days, as far as I'm concerned he should have spent the whole year in jail. What an unfortunate situation for all involved, especially the victim and the man's family.

chilly wrote on Jun 20, 2009 6:34 PM:

90 days? her rights were violated, and he only got 90 days? and i bet he dont serve all 90 either... this happened to me several years ago, (not from this man), can i file a claim too... i still have nightmares from it...no seriously, if anyone knows the statute of limitations on this i would love to know..

Coquillian wrote on Jun 20, 2009 9:34 AM:

I wonder if it was worth it? Divorce, having to register, etc. My heart goes out to the little girl who came here expecting to learn about American culture, and got a taste of the worst we have to offer.

swede wrote on Jun 20, 2009 8:23 AM:

JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF GOOD OL BOY JUSTICE. 90 DAY'S FOR SEX ABUSE. LETS MAKE A DEAL IS WHAT COOS COUNTY SHOULD BE RENAMED.
