Coquille man pleads guilty to sex abuse

Both Coos County Deputy District Attorney Karen McClintock and Curtis H. Jack's lawyer John Trew recommended Jack serve 15 days in jail on his third-degree sex conviction.

Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Barron didn't buy it.

The judge said he wanted to hold the Coquille businessman who pleaded guilty Friday to a strict standard in sentencing. He sentenced him to 90 days in the county jail.

"The judge thought that was appropriate based on the violation of trust and that he is a leader in the community," McClintock said.

The misdemeanor charge came out of a plea bargain over a May 12 incident in which Jack touched his teenage exchange student's breast against her will, a Coos County press release said. Barron could have sent Jack to jail longer, since the charge carries a maximum sentence of a year in jail.

The Coos County District Attorney's Office dropped two other charges of first- and third degree sex abuse in the plea deal.

McClintock said she offered Jack the plea bargain with the stipulation that it was only available before the girl got on a plane to return home Friday. She said the girl was willing to return to the U.S. if the case went to trial.

"She wanted to get the matter settled so she can get on with the rest of her life," McClintock said.

The deputy DA said she had a strong case on the felony first-degree sex abuse charge, but needed to take into consideration the student's wishes and the cost to the prosecution if the girl returned for trial.

Barron also sentenced Jack, who owns Coquille Supply, to three years of supervised probation, and he will have to register as a sex offender, pay a $6,250 fine and complete a sex offender treatment program.
