The state’s biggest annual amateur golf tournament, the Oregon Amateur, returns to the South Coast for the first time since 2002 when the 100th edition of the event is held at Bandon Dunes next week.

The 111 men and 47 women will play stroke-play qualifying rounds on Monday and Tuesday before the fields are cut for the match-play portion of the event, which begins Wednesday morning and concludes Saturday.

The men’s field will be reduced to 64 golfers. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held Friday and the 36-hole final on Saturday.

The tournament will be at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort for the first time since 2002, when the event was held at Pacific Dunes. That year, Kailin Downs was the women’s champion, while Greg LaVoie took the men’s title.

Last year, the Oregon Junior Amateur also was held at Bandon Dunes, and the resort has hosted other regional amateur events.

Bandon Dunes also was chosen this week to host the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links Tournament and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Tournament.

“It’s a privilege to have the 100th anniversary of the Oregon Amateur,” said Bandon Dunes General Manager Hank Hickox.

The field next week includes a number of men with South Coast ties.

Siuslaw graduate and three-time state champion Jesse Schutte will be joined by Marshfield graduate Skyler Johnson and Coos Bay resident Tim Tucker.

At the recent Oregon Public Links Championship at Sandpines Golf Links, Tucker tied for third and Schutte placed 18th. Johnson qualified by tying for second in a qualifying tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks on Saturday.

As a caddie at Bandon Dunes, Tucker also qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur when it was held at the resort in 2007 and advanced to the match play portion of that event.

Four current or former Southwestern Oregon Community College golfers also will be playing next week — Sam Ayotte, Justin Kadin, Sean Free and Adam Burlison.

Two South Coast women are in the field, Kiri Carnahan of Bandon and Marie Simonds of Coquille.

After the two qualifying rounds, the women’s field will be cut to 32 for match play.

The women will have the quarterfinals on Thursday, the semifinals on Friday and the 36-hole final on Saturday.

Defending women’s champion Kate Hildahl is in the field  next week. Blake Seabaugh, who won the men’s title last year, has since turned professional.
