COQUILLE — At least one of the long-awaited street repair projects has its funding.

Finance manager Chuck Dufner announced  this week the city received $94,000 in stimulus funds from the Oregon Department of Transportation for street repairs.

The announcement came as the city council adopted its $17.4 million 2009-10 budget. Before adoption, Dufner recommended the council transfer $120,000 from the street reserve fund to the street fund, assuring enough money is available for the $300,000 project the council approved earlier in the year.

Dufner also asked the council to approve last-minute changes to the 2008-09 budget. Some departments needed an influx of contingency funds to balance, the finance manager said.

The biggest were the water fund, which needed $200,000 extra for higher than anticipated upgrade project costs and the police department, where hiring a new chief, training new officers and an unusual amount of crime in town had the department needing $47,000. Altogether, the city transferred about $364,000 out of its operating contingency funds.

“Our crystal ball wasn’t as good as it usually is,” Councilor Loran Wiese explained.
