Baseball Notes: Mariners put left-hander on disabled list

SAN DIEGO — Seattle Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday with shoulder inflammation.
Bedard, 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA in 11 starts, has not pitched since June 7. The 30-year-old missed a start in Colorado last weekend with the inflammation before being placed on the DL retroactive to June 8.
He is scheduled to see Los Angeles Angels orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum today. Yocum performed shoulder surgery on Bedard in September.
“I’m hoping this is just precautionary. We backdated the DL, which bought us some time,” general manager Jack Zduriencik said before the Mariners played the San Diego Padres.
“What we’re hoping for is that he’s ready to go next week,” Zduriencik said. “That’s our best plans for him and we hope that happens. We’ll know a little more after tomorrow. Nobody wants to take a chance. We’re close, we’re right here and Yocum’s very familiar with him and what’s gone on in the past.”
Bedard signed a $7.75 million, one-year deal last winter to avoid arbitration and will lose money if he stays out long. He can make $600,000 in performance bonuses: $75,000 for 150 innings, $100,000 for 165 innings, $150,000 for 180 innings, $125,000 for 195 innings and $150,000 for 205 innings.
Halladay injured
PHILADELPHIA — Toronto ace Roy Halladay is headed to the disabled list.
The Blue Jays plan to put Halladay and closer Scott Downs on the DL today, further depleting their injury-riddled pitching staff.
Right-hander Casey Janssen was placed on the 15-day DL before Wednesday night’s game against the Phillies. Left-hander Brad Mills was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Janssen’s spot, and he is slated to make his major league debut at Philadelphia today.
The rash of injuries leaves the Blue Jays without their top five starters. Dustin McGowan, Shaun Marcum and Jesse Litsch also are on the DL.
Halladay strained his right groin last Friday. Downs strained his big left toe during Tuesday’s 8-3 victory. He was injured while swinging at a pitch.
Janssen has inflammation in his surgically repaired shoulder.
Martinez ready to sign
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Pedro Martinez could be back on a major league mound soon.
The right-hander said on Wednesday that he has had talks with the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays and hopes to sign a contract in the near future.
“There’s a good chance I’ll be signing soon, but there still isn’t anything firm,” Martinez told The Associated Press.
Martinez, 37, has been training in his native Dominican Republic in hopes of returning to the majors. His four-year deal with the New York Mets ended after last season, making Martinez a free agent.
“Chicago and Tampa Bay are the two teams that have shown the most interest and we are negotiating with them, although I’ve told my agent not to call me until it’s a done deal,” he said.
Martinez has a 214-99 record with an ERA of 2.91 in 17 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox and the Mets.
La Russa named All-Star coach for NL
NEW YORK — Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will join Dodgers manager Joe Torre as an NL coach for next month’s All-Star game in St. Louis.
Torre said last month he had been selected by Philadelphia’s Charlie Manuel, the NL manager.
AL manager Joe Maddon of Tampa Bay picked Kansas City’s Trey Hillman and Seattle’s Don Wakamatsu as his coaches, the commissioner’s office said Wednesday.
The game is July 14.
