Bryce Weidman pitched a gem Tuesday as Three Rivers beat visiting Springfield 3-1 to improve to 2-0 in the league season.

Weidman pitched eight innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six batters and walking one.

Weidman threw 104 pitches, 71 for strikes. Eddie Crow came in to save the game in the ninth.

Zach Laxague had two doubles for the Sandblasters and Travis Iverson broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Kyle Davis also had a key hit in the sixth for Three Rivers.

“It was picture perfect pitching, by both teams really, but we were able to grind through it and once again win the last nine outs of the ballgame,” said Three Rivers coach Ben Johnson.

Cameron Bates and Nick Gregory combined on a seven-hitter for Springfield.

The Sandblasters also won their opener, a wild 17-13 win over visiting Post 9 of Salem.

The teams combined for 17 runs in the first three innings. Post 9 had five straight doubles in the third inning.

Laxague had a triple to start the second inning for Three Rivers and added a grand slam down the left-field line later in the inning. Drew Rainwater, Eddie Crow and Cole Skriver also had big nights as the top four batters in the Sandblasters’ lineup went 9-for-17 with nine runs and 13 RBIs.

Three Rivers secured the win with seven runs in the seventh inning, the key hit a bases-loaded drag bunt by Joe Crow. Post 9 led 11-10 entering the inning.

“I thought our bench did a nice job of recognizing when we entered the red zone on offense and our team came alive and came through when our base runners got into scoring position, which was great to see,” Johnson said.

Willie Grader allowed just four hits while pitching 4 1-3 innings of relief for Three Rivers.

“It was an ugly game for us defensively,” Johnson said. “But like I told our young men, good teams find a way to win ugly, especially early in the season.”

The Sandblasters suffered their first Zone 3 loss Wednesday night, as the visiting Withnell Dodgers pounded Three Rivers 21-5 in seven innings.

Three Rivers is off tonight, after a nonleague game against Beaverton fell through, but will play league games at Springfield on Friday and Albany on Saturday.

Richey’s Market is currently in first place in Zone 3 at 5-0, with Withnell Dodge at 4-1 and Three Rivers at 2-1. Albany is 1-3, Post 9 1-4 and Springfield 0-4.
