As members of the Bay Area R/C Fliers Association gathered at Tugman State Park last week, the droning of toy motors grew louder and then quieted as tiny airplanes plunked into Eel Lake. But landing an airplane on or taking off from water takes a different skillset, said association president Phil Shellabarger. “Water is different,” he said. Planes are outfitted with floats and rudders, and planes are landed without the “flare” technique used over a dry runway. “You need to set it up right,” Shellabarger said. The group also requires a rescue boat to pluck downed aircraft from the water.
