Gender gap in Eastern Oregon jobless figures

BAKER CITY (AP) - The Oregon Employment Department says unemployment claims filed by men outnumbered women's claims nearly two-to-one in northeastern Oregon during 2008 and the first quarter of this year.
Jason Yohannan, who compiled the agency's June edition of Eastern Oregon Labor Trends, says the gap is likely explained by the damage the recession has inflicted on the male-dominated manufacturing and construction industries.
The report also shows wages continuing to lag in northeastern Oregon.
