The shriek of jets and the sounds of other flying machines will join the traditional hiss and boom of fireworks come Independence Day weekend, when the first air show in years makes its debut in North Bend.

Meant to honor veterans and current members of the armed forces, the "Salute to the Military" Air Show & Display on July 4 will feature aircraft from World War I to the present, along with precision parachutists, aerobatics and a search and rescue demonstration from the U.S. Coast Guard's Air Station North Bend.

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," said Ray Doering, the communications manager for The Mill Casino-Hotel.

The Mill and organizers from the Sandfest in North Bend will provide the event for free on Mill property and over the bay.

"For The Mill, it fits in because we do the July 3rd fireworks, so this was kind of a nice way to add another community celebration for the weekend," Doering said. Sandfest organizers "had mentioned that they wanted to do an air show in the area. We told them that we have a perfect location right here."

Because The Mill recently began providing alcoholic beverages on the casino floor, it discontinued its traditional July 3 children's activities, so the air show should make up for the change.

The air show is expected to begin at about 11:30 a.m. and run to about 2:30 p.m.

Terry Wilmeth, an organizer for the Sandfest, which is run by the Northwest Off-road Timing Authority, said the company resurrected the ATVing event last year that had died in the 1990s. It will run July 4-12.

"We actually designed it around the original event and brought it back to its home," he explained.

But when Wilmeth and fellow organizers realized they could open Sandfest on the fourth - a Saturday - they began kicking around the idea of adding something a bit more patriotic to the event.

A U.S. Air Force vet, Wilmeth and racing event coordinator Dan Molner - a Navy veteran - felt an air show would be a great way to honor veterans. He added that it would give an opportunity for veterans to see aircraft they flew or worked on back in the day.

"Both of us kind of recognized the significance of having an event on Fourth of July," Wilmeth said.

He added that the air show would be used  as a fundraiser to support a memorial for Oregon National Guardsmen who died in Afghanistan when a flight was hit by Taliban rockets.

Although the schedule is still in the works, Wilmeth said the show should begin with the United States Army Silver Wings Command  Demonstration Team - a group of precision parachutists who will drop out of the sky with an American flag, while a local sings the national anthem.

Wilmeth hopes to a have few veterans to speak at the opening ceremony.

Following the parachutists, the North Bend Coast Guard Search & Rescue unit will demonstrate an aerial rescue in which it will fetch a victim out of the water with a helicopter.

There also will be a display of World War II-era jeeps and a specialized military ATV, the Night Prowler light tactical ATV, by Oregon-based RP Advanced Mobile Systems. Made for special operations, it will be shown to the public for the first time at The Mill.

"We thought that was kind of cool,"Wilmeth said.

At about 1 p.m., a WWII era B-25 bomber will fly by, along with formation flying performed by two jets - a Russian MiG-17 and an American F-86 Saber Jet.

"Those two faced off during the Korean War," Wilmeth boasted.

Additionally, the Oregon National Guard will do a fly-by with a CH-47 Chinook helicopter along with a WWI-era Stearman bi-plane. More precision parachute drops by the Silver Wings will follow that act.

He's also hoping that two F-15 Eagle fighter jets from the Oregon Air National Guard will drop by.

For the finale, aerobatic pilot Renny Price will put on an aerobatic show with his Sukhoi SU-29.

I'm not an airshow guy but I think its cool North Bend has a waterfront location capable of hosting an event that a lot of my friends and neighbors will enjoy.

Kay - You sure seem to have some unresolved issues. Have you ever attended any of the family friendly events all over town? They are quite fun and the children as well as their families enjoy this time together. So please just get over yourself!

as interesting as the airshow maybe and honoring the vets and all...taking away the preshow 'carnival' i feel isnt a smart move. and the mills excuse for deleting it because of the alcohol on the floor thing is stupid. there will be kids at the airshow! what are you going to do about them?

TRY THIS, taking care of your own children without amusements?

Why the H do your children have to have a carnival at someone else's expense?

Geesh what a bunch of whiners.

I see you appreciate the free sauce being handed out on the floor. They cut the carnival, end of story. It is what I said it to be. Now go read about the Mill renigging on the tax paid. Put the pieces of the puzzle together. The Mill is stuck on the sandbar with a 100 year storm looming on the horizon.

bigdog wrote on Jun 18, 2009 4:13 PM:

Krissy if you want i heard they may be offering rides in some of the planes and i am willing to get you a ticket to see if you can handle it.

Krissy wrote on Jun 18, 2009 1:09 PM:

Just because I am terrified of airplanes I am getting bashed! Come on people. It was an opinion get over it!

everyman wrote on Jun 18, 2009 11:59 AM:

This is just my opinion...but I think the best place to watch this air show will be on the opposite side of the bay, on one of those little pull-outs...and they might fly right over your heads when they turn and stuff...

tsunami wrote on Jun 18, 2009 9:13 AM:

i havent read or heard that the mill casino, which is first and foremost an adult playground, banning kids from attending the air show. i'm sure they will enjoy as much or more than the adults. i think it will turn out to be a nice shindig for the kids

pril wrote on Jun 18, 2009 8:10 AM:

the F-15s out of Klamath are in Boise for a few more months. Hope you guys can still get some. We miss ours!

The Brutal Truth wrote on Jun 18, 2009 6:59 AM:

Sounds fun, I might check it out.

And for Krissy--I knew it wouldn't be long before somebody complained!

Pig Nuts wrote on Jun 17, 2009 7:31 PM:

Krissy, threes company Krissy? Honey, I understand growing up here in Coos Bay is like being isolated from the real world. I assure you, it is going to be just fine, the Bogeyman will not be invited.

Nice job Mill!

Cut the kids activities from the budget to service the drunks. Can't blame you though. Not like you can get kids tanked & have them empty their pockets into your slot machine. Do what ever it takes to get the debt service ratio back up. 80 grand blown in fees, would have thrown a pretty nice shindig for the kids don't you think?

You think the Mig & Saber Jet can do some dog fighting for the crowd? Have them fly under the bay bridge for one of the tricks.

tsunami wrote on Jun 17, 2009 5:04 PM:

well krissy, it sounds like a pretty good deal for the fourth. and what's more it's honouring veterans. if it werent safe they wouldnt have it. the planes will probably be flying over your house anyway

krissy wrote on Jun 17, 2009 3:45 PM:

I for one plan to be as far away from the Mill as possible on that day. It does NOT seem like a very safe or smart idea for that location!

The Mill Communications wrote on Jun 17, 2009 3:25 PM:

The Mill will have an outdoor grill and beverage station at the area north of the casino from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on July 4. Also, while the event is free, there will be some reserved seating available for $15 per person ($10 with a Mill Club card).

will there be food and beverages provided/available during the show?
