The North Coos Waterfront dropped a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend against stiff competition, first losing 2-0 and 12-4 to last year’s league-champion Sheldon Saturday before falling 6-4 and 8-6 to defending American Legion A champ Ashland Sunday.
“I think we played probably two of the best clubs at our level in the state,” said Waterfront coach Brad Horning. “We’re getting stretched by some good competition, but I think we’re slowly responding to it and getting better.”
Sheldon got things started on Saturday when pinch runner Nick Steele scored on a suicide squeeze in the third inning of the opener. Sheldon then added to its lead in the fourth when Tyler Harrell came home on a fielder’s choice.
Kyle Davis and Elliot Aurdahl combined for a three-hitter for North Coos, but the Waterfront couldn’t manage much offense.
North Coos catcher Dalton Iveans went 2-for-3 in the game.
In the nightcap, Sheldon opened the floodgates offensively, tallying 12 hits and managing three runs apiece in the third, fourth and sixth innings of the 12-4 blowout.
Garrett Herming went 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a double for Sheldon.
Nic Canaday blasted a three-run home run in the sixth for the Waterfront, scoring Elliot Aurdahl after he walked and Iveans, who’d reached on a double.
North Coos committed three errors in the game to go with seven hits.
In the Sunday opener, visiting Ashland scored six runs with 13 hits.
The Waterfront took a 4-3 lead after five, but Ashland blew the game open with a three-run homer from Kealii Cecil in the sixth.
North Coos scored two runs in the first on an RBI double from Iveans and an RBI single by Canaday, and built the lead with a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings.
Ashland won the extra-innings nightcap with two runs in the top of the ninth after the ballclubs played to a 6-6 stalemate through seven innings.
Canaday had a three-run shot in a four-run fourth for the Waterfront, which tied the ballgame with a run scored by Jimmy Mack on a wild pitch.
Cecil again was a dagger for Ashland, though, winning the game with a two-run homer in the ninth.
