Local photographers capture area sights, still life in museum show
COOS BAY — When people come to the South Coast, they take pictures.
For those who love to capture the beauty of nature, there’s no shortage of material in the area.
But as visitors to local scenic spots often find, getting the perfect shot isn’t as easy as it looks.
Eleven local photographers show the results of their efforts in a new exhibit at the Coos Art Museum. The Oregon Coast Photographers Association exhibition runs through Aug. 1 in the museum’s Uno Richter Atrium.
The 35 works in the show are mainly scenic nature and still life photography.
It’s the second museum exhibit for the group, which frequently shows at Pony Village Mall and was last at the museum in fall 2005. The exhibit was juried by Burl and Julie Noggle of LifeStyle Portraits and the museum’s Karen Hammer.
“We wanted to put our best in because it’s a museum show,” said Carol Todd, the club’s president. “Our skill levels range from brand new, just started taking pictures, to professional.”
Though two artists, Dan Hull and Dan Kenagy, account for more than half of the works in the show, everyone who entered was included, Todd said.
Club activities include monthly outings called shootouts, competitions, discussions and seminars. The group, which has about 35 members, also annually hangs the photography exhibit at the Coos County Fair and judges the youth competition.
“The common thread is we all love photography,” Todd said.
