Sand, its movements and its mysteries will be the subject of the talk "Exploring the Oregon Dunes" at Reedsport's Umpqua Discovery Center this month.

CoastWatch is co-sponsoring the event at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, with guest speaker Dina Pavlis, a CoastWatch "mile adopter" and the author of "Secrets of the Oregon Dunes," a press release said. The guidebook details the history and geology of the dunes.

The slide presentation is free. CoastWatch Director Phillip Johnson will also be on hand to explain how interested citizens can adopt miles of the shoreline to help to keep watch over the coast.

Pavlis of Florence is a certified interpretive guide and member of the National Association for Interpretation. She volunteers each summer as a guide for the U.S. Forest  Service on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. As well as giving talks and leading guided hikes, she assists with training new rangers and has written an Oregon Dunes training guide used by the Forest Service.

Pavlis also will lead a hike through the dunes beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 27. It begins at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area (often called the Dunes Overlook) between Reedsport and Florence.

The Umpqua Discovery Center is at 409 Riverfront Way. For more information, call Johnson at (503) 238-4450, e-mail orshores@teleport.com, or call Diane Novak at the Discovery Center, (541) 271-4816, umpquadiscoverycenter@charterinternet.com.
