A Charleston man suffered some scratches when his car crashed on state Highway 42 east of Bridge on Thursday.

At about 6 p.m., a westbound 1987 Toyota Tercel left the road and hit some fog markers while rounding a corning near milepost 42 on the highway.

The Toyota rolled and landed on its top on the highway, according to an Oregon State Police press release. The driver, Richard E. Lowden, 56, declined medical treatment at the scene.

A trooper cited Lowden on failure to maintain a single lane of travel. The Tercel had to be towed from the scene.

Police nab would-be can recycler

Coos Bay police officers arrested a Charleston man Wednesday following a report of someone trying to get money for recyclables he hadn’t turned in.

At 9:24 a.m., officers received the report of fraud in progress from an employee of McKay’s Market, 130 N. Cammann St. in Empire.

Police Chief Rodger Craddock said officers believe the man used a technique to get money for empties he didn’t possess. The chief, who described the crime as theft by deception, said he wasn’t successful.

“He attempted to get money for bottle returns that he was not returning,” Craddock said.

Officers then arrested Jedediah Parks, 48, on charges of third-degree theft, computer crime and parole violation.

He was taken to Coos County jail, where he remained this morning without bail.
