NEWPORT (AP) — A Yachats woman on trial for feeding black bears outside her home has been convicted of harassing wildlife.

But 61-year-old Karen Noyes was found not guilty Tuesday of recklessly endangering another person.

Neighbors and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife say the woman repeatedly ignored requests to stop feeding the animals.

Bears fed by people often lose their natural fear of humans and become nuisances. Neighbors say that’s exactly what happened last summer.

One woman testified that a bear got stuck in her dog door. And a neighbor who raises birds testified that a bear stormed a barn and killed 60 turkeys.

Noyes is scheduled to be sentenced June 25.

I think this is great. Down here in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area, bears are a real problem...thanks to no-nothing/care-nothing people who constantly feed them. They break into homes, cars, garbage cans etc causing all kinds of damage. Generally, wildlife officials catch the bear and release it in another area only to have it return to the area. Eventually, the bear is exterminated. This is sad. I don't blame the officials for killing the bear. I place the blame on the no-nothing/care-nothing people who fed them in the first place!

I would personally support legal restrictions against feeding wildlife in general. Even the cute little birds and chipmunks. Although such a law would be hard to enforce. The reason is that the food the public feeds these critters is not part of their natural diet. At the worst, the food that is given them could make them sick and die. At the very least, they become a nuisance. I certainly don't want them rummaging around in my pack for my food. Do you?

So my advice is to let all creatures great and small find their own food.
